wolf ID

After my pondering - first one which was referred to as H. microlepis could be right. This species is very similar do H. malabaricus (as if they were "sisters species"), but H. microlepis (as the name means...!) has smaller scales (micro + lepis). Is it found in rivers of the trans-andean South America (this means all rivers west of the Andes cordillera). Nobody knows its real distribution, but I believe it is from Panamá to Ecuador, or something like that.

The second wolf is a great mysterery, but it is also an awesome picture. I can actually see the lower part of the head where it is evident that the contralateral dentaries are parallel to each other. This means that is no common H. malabaricus. It is referred as H. missiones. I was wondering if it is Missiones, Paraguay. If so, the number of pores along the dentary (which could also be seen in the picture !) tell us it is one specimens of H. australis, one of the new species we described this year. That is from the south part of the continent.

yes I saw that. I wonder how big do they get.
the largest size mentioned in the text was 220mm but no where maximum size was mentioned. or did I miss it?

Now I gotta figure out to go for the H. australis or the possible H. microlepis....decisions, decisions, decisions...

Fishbase says 44cm, not entirely sure how accurate that is but I would think that would put it about 30cm in captivity possible a little larger. Could I ask how much it is going for.

if 30cm then my 75g is prefect.

its going for $99 each at 6"

fish base is offbase many times...

Erik, so you think how big will it get? is the 220mm SL a reasonable number?

The ranges on these have been seen from typical 220mm to 450mm to the largest being sampled. And like anything in south america there could be some lurking monster pushing 2 ft.
But these #'s are typical not exceptions.
