Woman Swims from Cuba to Florida!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the question being asked is- how was she allowed to GO to Cuba to swim back to Fl. Last I knew, you needed a presidential pardon to go there or something.

I couldn't believe she wasn't completely exhausted when she made landfall...She walked among the crowd and talked with reporters.

Doesn't explain the fact that we are supposedly not allowed on her shores yet this woman swam from there.

Cuba doesn't disallow AMERICANS anymore thats all USA POLITICS

Thanks Strollo.I find the whole U.S. embargo thing interesting.

naw, thats all part of the old school mythology about the place.... unless your a fugitive, arrangements can be made... we just discourage tourism.... EUROPEANS vacation there all the time

No other country participates in the embargo as I understand it.

Europeans are not the U.S. read the following excerpt. Basically says you cannot spend money in Cuba. According to the U.S. Department of State: "Cuban Assets Control Regulations are enforced by the U.S. Treasury Department and affect all U.S. citizens and permanent residents wherever they are located, all people and organizations physically located in the United States, and all branches and subsidiaries of U.S. organizations throughout the world. Regulation does not limit travel of U.S. citizens to Cuba per se, but it makes it illegal for U.S. citizens to have transactions (spend money or receive gifts) in Cuba, under most circumstances. Since even paying unavoidable airfare ticket taxes into a Cuban airport would violate the transaction law, it is impossible for ordinary tourists to visit Cuba without breaking the monetary transaction rule.

Exactly ,tourism is Discouraged.... you can still get around it by travelling by your own boat , and not spending money there or travelling from another country and not spending money

I should point out this is her 4th attempt at this swim in 30 years....and other people have completed the swim using a shark cage for protection. Problem is the cage creates a draft, obviously aiding the swimmer

How can somebody go on vacation somewhere and not spend money? No food, drinks, sleeping arrangements?
