Guppies are food, nothing more. I love them, but most especially when they are in the gullets of my monsters.
I am woman. RAWR!!

:D

For girls ain't into fishkeeping :)

As a woman that is seriously obsessed with fish keeping, IMO it is the people involved, male or female. Either you like dogs or you don't... Either you like cats or you don't... Either you like kids or you don't... Either you like fish or you don't... The trick is finding someone that is compatible with you and will respect you for what you like regardless of their own likes or dislikes.... Now how do I convince my partner to upgrade the 300 to a 540???

First time through l read this abbreviation and emphasis with all caps as a second girlfriend and was like well i understand why hes ok with you keeping fish lol

I thought that too at first! I was like MAJOR WIN!!!!!

I work at a fish store, and I don't see a lot of women hobbyists. Most of the knowledgeable hobbyists are men. Most women that come into the store don't have a fish tank, and then they see a "blue fish" and they convince their boyfriend to set up a tank for blue fish. Many of these customers keep fish for about a month, and when the fish die they leave the hobby.

We do have regular women customers that know about fish and have kept them for years as well, but this is not often the case.

From most of the people that I have known, men tend to have hobbys and women tend to go out with friends or want to go out on dates with their man.

In my personal life, my girlfriend is extremely disapproving. She says stuff like "You spent three hundred dollars on a fish tank!?!?!?" (It was a 165 gallon).

In my opinion, I would much rather spend that on a fish tank that will last for years instead of three expensive dinner dates that last a total of 3 hours.

Now I do know a lot of women collect plates, spoons, and those porcelain figures(forget the names) or maybe knit or crochet but for the most part I dont think I have ever been with a woman who has collected anything except maybe candles.

I collect road signs I harvest from the wild. XD

I think some women just like micro-managing their guys too much. Both of my brothers have/had huge tanks. One sister in law is completely cool about it and encourages it, other made my other brother sell his tank because it took up too much space and smelled funny. *shrugs*

For girls who ain't into fishkeeping, the problem is either money or fish.

They love guppies and all the other beautiful cute fish like angels
But show them a large piranha or some MONSTER fishes, they would hate it.

I disagree 100%. The majority of people who come through my fishroom (women and childrenincluded) are MOST interested in my monster fish (bichirs, gar, snook, large cichlids).

Big fish are always cool no matter what the age or sex is its just a fact. Not many people always see the babies in the LFS but to see them full grown it's different and fun.

I think it's the Girly girls that don't get it. My brothers girlfriend flat out said "I don't like fish they are dumb." that bumped her down a few pegs for me. But she is the type of girl that likes to lay on the beach or shop. Most of my female friends and even little girls love my tanks. My 2 year old daughter loves them. I keep mostly SA Cichlids big and small.

My friends 5 year old Daughter is asking for a fish tank. Even said she would give up the dog for one haha. I told her to send her to my house to help me clean my tanks.

Funny you say this, since the toadfish and eel are mine, and the angelfish are my husband's. I had to beg and plead for him to let me keep them (they came with a tank I bought) and he doesn't even enjoy watching them eat or anything, which is lame...
But he DID spend his entire lunch break trying to save a male endler's livebearer from the sump/overflow. He's a good guy, I just have to be really convincing when it comes to "ugly" fish.

Oh my god! I kind of wish I had seen it this way at first, so I could have seen the hilarity. Second hand, it's pretty good too, though. I keep goldfish, so when I see GF abbreviated, my mind automatically goes to the feeshes.

Poor dog.

In my younger days.....Chicks thought my fish tanks were BALLIN! Then after they had time to sit and watch for a bit, they'd get intrigued and fall in love with fish.

At the end of the day, I'm just happy that I got to plant the fishkeeping seed in a few girls that will remember it for the rest of their life.. :grinyes:
