Hey well as most of you know I am thinking about getting a cichlid to teach my other fish to eat pellets.

I was thinking about getting a JD because that is the one cichlid that I have always wanted but never got, I know JDs grow very slow as well as dats but I was wondering if I got a JD the same size as my AT would it grow at the same rate? because I believe the JD and my AT will grow to around the same size and be equally aggressive so I think it would be a good match or am I wrong? and I dont want to end up with another overly aggressive oscar that will outgrow the AT in no time and force me to give it up...

JD growth rate varies. Some of them grow very fast, up to full size in a year.

In any case, even a slow growing JD's growth rate will completely dwarf the growth rate of any dat. How big is your AT? I'd say the slowest you're looking at a JD reaching full size is 3 years, but with good water quality I would bet on it being faster.

jd grow pretty fast, as do most cichlids. I would count on under one year for the size difference to be considerable.

He is about 5" ATM and most JDs I see in store are around 2.5-3"s

Oh, they'll outgrow him pretty fast then.

so how slow do dats grow? 3" a year? :D

I've had my babies for over 5 months and the fastest growers have grown just over an inch. This is with tons of feeding, lots of water changes, really good water quality. Some of the others haven't grown over a half inch.

I dunno if they start growing faster or slower when they get to a few inches long, but I would still assume the JD will way outgrow them.
That's part of the reason big dats are so expensive, they take FOREVER to get big.

Individual dats grow at different rates, I just wouldn't chance it.

thanks for that info, I hope they live a long time since they take so long to get big :D
