Wondershells . . . Who uses them?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you're keeping South American /Amazonian species, why bother with shells at all?
These species thrive in low hardness, low alkaline water. Just be sure to do enough water changes to dilute the uric acids from the waters lack of buffering capacity
If you are keeping Central, or rift lake African species, yes.... pour on the aragonite, and chicken grit.

All of the above plus nile river. It's a mish mosh of many rescue fish. I took on fish that were big killers and had been shunned. I'm sorting some of them out into different tanks so they make more sense and arranging things so they get along.

Usually.

I am using some aragonite sand, and I've got 40lbs, but it was too fine. I'm planning to put it into the sump for the new tank.

Maybe just construct a limestone hardscape. It works for me.

My buddy Mark, who owns our local fish store , 7 Seas Aquarium, gave me this reactor yesterday; and I think I'll be able to use it with aragonite.

I previously had put aragonite sand in the bottom of my African cichlid tank but it was too messy and clogging up my sponge filters. The fish were constantly digging it up and making up mess of the whole tank.

Anyhow I told him I had taken out the sand and put the gravel back in and he gave me this fluidized bed reactor, which sells for something like $75 online. Or at least it will be a reactor once I put some aragonite in it.

I just set it up with the "mixed sand" media included in the Box to see if it would work.

... and I hooked it up to this little Cobalt power head I had lying around.

This is the lowest level to which you can adjust it with the powerhead running.

The adjustment is a little tricky and it's easy to get the level too high.

Here it is just boiling over on the surface.

My plan was to build a much larger one of these out of the used 5 gallon tank I have, but maybe it doesn't need to be that big for the 125/30/90 system.

I have no idea how effective this will be in any regard or how long it will last, but it runs, it doesn't leak, and it was free, I am totally happy.

I'm going to let it run for a while and cycle in the sand, because it will eventually get mixed in with my Sump filter. I would try it with the aragonite right now but it might not work as well. That sand could be too fluffy. This is running off of my 20 gallon sump which is the filter for my 55 gallon African cichlid tank.

Those fish will be going into the 125 in a few days. I have to do a little Plumbing and fill the tank.

Any farm supply store will have the oyster shells though should be less than $10 or so for like a 50 lb sack

We have a tractor supply company here, and that's where I got my black diamond sand. I will swing by and pick up a bag of the shell.

The thing about Wondershell is it's not just going to alter the water but it's supposed to buffer the water as well. I don't know what degree of buffering I will get from any one of these other substances.

Anyhow it's been a crazy world for me. We were living in the garage and remodeling the whole house and moving fish tanks around all of the time. I had various garage tanks, I filled my office with tanks, I move those tanks back out when the house was about done . . . setting up a patio tank and buying new bigger tanks and graduating fish from one to the next . . . Every single tank has been in the midst of a mini cycle, full cycle, disrupted cycle, etc. And this lunacy has had me changing a lot of water during the drought.

The Wonder shells were a great convenience throughout this process. Sometimes I had to move fish from one aquarium to another where the water was not compatible and had to make it so quickly.

But now I am working on the last tank set up and sump. There won't be any more setups. Only teardowns of the last two aquariums I am removing.

Another good read here:

Just make sure to rinse the b'jesus out of them first, as they are initially very dirty from the traces of mud that comes with it.

This new moving bed filter has a sorta Zen quality to it.

The boiling surface of the sand is repressed and damped by the pressure of water above. It struggles to lift above the general surface level. There's chaotic wave turbulence that builds and crashes.

It's fun to watch, and now I want a bigger one.

BTW, I didn't believe the African test was starting with 4.0 pH water. That's kinda insane, but it's what they had.

From what I read it appears that aragonite will buffer the pH too low for malawis.

Right now I seem to be running about 7.6 which ain't much better.
