Wood for tank stand building

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Probubly ...although I refuse to answer to that publicly...

For 4' and shorter I use 4-4"x4"...6 legs for 5 or 6' stands...8 legs for 8'...10 for 10....ect.

What did you use; and can you tell me why?!

I build my stands from Monterey cypress or pine that I saw myself. But if you are buying material, go with the 2x and ply.
My stands use t&g profile boards instead of ply, but thats mainly because I would have to buy ply, I can saw my own boards. ;)

These are some of the strands I have made

A low (coffee table height) cypress stand.

Another cypress stand for 2 x 2ft tanks.

A pine stand for 2 x 3ft tanks. Only have one in it at the moment though.

So there are no hard and fast rules on how to build a tank stand, just make sure it's STRONG.

2x4's work just as well as 4x4's. I used 2x4's on my stand. I would use 2x4's on anything below 75 gallons. 75 gallons and up I would use 4x4's, but that's just me.

VERY nice stands. I would LOVE to have access to wood like that...and if we move to WASH state I might get my chance...LOL

I use a lot of 13 ply voidless oak ply (2x 3/4" thick) to build bass guitar speaker cabnets so I tend to use what I'm famillier with.

Thanks Ian.
I am wondering what I should use to connect the wood together. should I use that metal thing & wood glue?

also i just talked to my neighbor and he told me if the nails want to be galvanized or stainless..he said that galvanized can rust if it gets wet.
is he talking about stainless nails? will they work for tank stands?

also wolf, i'll try to find the 13 ply. what's voidless?

just a higher grade...use stainless steal screws rather than nails and pre-drill the holes to prevent splitting.

Screws and wood glue. Stainless screws wont hurt, but as you are going to cover everything with a layer of waterproof poly, then normal zinc plated ones are OK. If it was a marine tank where there is going to be salt around then stainless would be a good idea. But if you have that much water in your stand you have a bigger problem than some rusty screws .

Like Wolf said, predrill the screw holes, just makes life SO much easier.

If you do a search you will probably find several step by step stand building threads with diagrams and pics of stands being built. There is a variety of different ways to construct them, but if you see how others have done it you can work out which is best for you. Will probably depend in what tools you have as well.

sorry forgot to add. it's a 40gallon breeder tank.
the water will now be filled to the top..so i'm guessing 400lbs of weight..

hey when i pre-drill the holes..do i want the holes to be the same size as the screws, or a little shorter?
