Wood in tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm boiling the 2 smaller pieces atm, getting a bit of tannin out but that's about it. After boiling I will leave soaking a couple of weeks as my LFS is out of eco complete and the other alternatives aren't in my area (and cost heaps to ship)

does eco-complete help with something? i am currently soaking wood also and i have eco-complete substrate.

The eco complete helps with plants. Does absolutely nothing for driftwood :-)

As long as there is no sap left in the wood, you should be okay. The sap is usually what contains the toxins.

Charcoal isn't just scorched wood. Charcoal is made when wood is burned in an anaerobic condition, that is, without Oxygen. Burned wood will release various carcinogenic compounds like benzopyrenes. It probably won't affect your fish, at least not in the short run. Just being clear that you're not adding charcoal to your tank. But generally burned things tend not to be good living organisms.

Doesnt eucalyptus produce some kind of narcotic?I remember reading thats why the koalas are so dopey.

Koalas are lethargic because eucalyptus leaves are extremely poor nutritionally and very hard to digest. They are either eating or sleeping and digesting. They have found a niche where there is no competition for food, but it comes at a price.
