Anyone know the type of wood in the picture?

Desperate to use it in my tank, but it floats so eagerly that it breaks the surface of the water when it bounces back up lol; haven't ever tried the slate option either.

hard to say, might be grape vine. might be cotton, nice piece of wood either way. i would just throw in and wait for it to sink, it finally will. I get most of my wood from the river in summer when levels are down. get some great root wood. love the crazy grain and patterns with root wood.

Nice piece, tie it down with some stones

Doubt anyone would be able to ID the wood, but it is a nice piece. As for waiting for it to sink... it is likely that it eventually will, but not every piece of wood will eventually sink, either. I have a big chunk in my oscar tank that I keep down with rocks stacked on top, and I that I got from a friend who kept it floating in a turtle tank for years before I got it. It still floats. Rocks on top is a bit risky, because if it gets shifted it can pop up and dump the rocks, which can hit the glass... I would be tempted to try the slate method for that one...

Yeah I'm too cautious to weigh down with something on top, if I can find a bit of slate I might give it a try
