Two days ago started eating tilapia and shrimp.

For some reason it doesn't take from the water column yet, it waits till the pieces sink and gently snatches them from the bottom.

Look at that belly! I know I was surprised it didn't eat that little endli.

WOOT FOR GARS!!

COHAZARD, did you have to starve it, and if so, how long? or what was your method in getting it to take non-live food?

i have been trying to get my gar off feeders for the past 2 months with no success and that's why i asked. thanks in advance.

good to hear that it's off live...

I did starve it because I didn't want any feeders in the tank. It's surival was up to itself.

Took about a week, then it started eating the food I offered.

If you keep giving feeders, it can wait you out.

u DO NOT STARVE a gar to get it off live. do ur research. their are plenty of effective methods of getting them off live. starvation can be highly detrimental!!

I have done my research, and it mentioned YOY and under 6" gars.

This one was 9" when I got it, and healthy enough to not starve to death.

but at 9" it can still be stunted(a big consern not just starving to death, permenant damage can be done). you should never starve a gar to get it off live. give it some live and at the same time add some prepared(pellets, shrimp whatever). if it doesnt eat it take it out. try again next day. and repeat. this has worked for all my gar. This is also the prepared method for serious gar keepers. we need to get rid of the idea that you starve gar to get them off live. this is incorrect!! also btw at 9" there is a good chance that ur gar is YOY. if not then it already is prob stunted

congrats. oddly enough, ive never had a gar not take something else within a couple days. somehow always managed to get them onto pellets just as quick as shrimp and fish.
