Woohoo my florida is taking shrimp and tilapia!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol true. but we have been explaining this for awhile now. dont mean to come off like a douche. i do a bit though huh? lol. There are threads again and again, every few weeks, about not starving the gar and the severe effects it can cause exspecially YOY gar.
BTW though u did prove O in florida, they arnt native. so in reality they shouldnt be in the same habitat. lol.

To everybody, I do not mean to come across like a douche, though i do. often. lol. If i do realise i dont mean to and forgive me ahead of time.

oh and i dont think i ever said, nice gar man! i really am sry if i came across as a douche!

see, what had happened wuz, I did research on gars before keeping them and I remember reading that you shouldn't starve small or YOY gar.

this one is 9" and was healthy when I got it, and had no problem waiting a few days to eat.

congrats on getting your gar to take non-living food. it's a challenge. i know. i had one that took 3 weeks to eat. i eventually got a second gar that took about 2 weeks. gars are a challenge. you did what you had to do. i get it. great job! last week, i even got my first gar to actually take a freeze-dried krill from my hand. i stuck the krill just below the surface and he took it from the side. gars are so funny but at the same time, they're as cool as ice.

You didnt know. Alot of people still advocate starving them. In all honesty it usually works. But it can cause problems. We just need to get the word out. Congrats on getting him off gar. much easier to put on some wieght!! now u can get him to be a BIG boy. lol. true monster

Its all good man. Im sry. Been stressed right now. been waiting on the sex of my baby and other baby related stuff. Im really sry i flipped out man.

Love them! :headbang2

I did starve it because I didn't want any feeders in the tank. It's surival was up to itself.

Took about a week, then it started eating the food I offered.

If you keep giving feeders, it can wait you out.

thanks Cohazard for the reply. i am sorry to cause the arguements by asking about your method.

i did too tried the starvation method and it didn't work. so my gar is back on live food for now. i am currently trying other method right now.

by the way, nice looking gar you have.

but at 9" it can still be stunted(a big consern not just starving to death, permenant damage can be done). you should never starve a gar to get it off live. give it some live and at the same time add some prepared(pellets, shrimp whatever). if it doesnt eat it take it out. try again next day. and repeat. this has worked for all my gar. This is also the prepared method for serious gar keepers. we need to get rid of the idea that you starve gar to get them off live. this is incorrect!! also btw at 9" there is a good chance that ur gar is YOY. if not then it already is prob stunted

i am currently trying out your method for the past few days now. it doesn't seem to work yet, hopefully soon it will. any methods would help better than none. just got to keep trying and thanks for the suggestion.

No worries, I couldn't even tell you were flipping out lol

I can tell you're busy because you didn't read in my post that I did research, and I did read about not starving young gar.

My gar doesn't exactly qualify as YOY though lol

Congrats on the baby and best of luck. First time father?

What kind of damage is done in starving young gar?

yeah first time father to be!! i posted sonogram pics in the lounge.
anyway starving a young gar can, key word is can, cause premenant stunting.
I wasnt really flippin out but i was kinda bein a douche.
timdo, my method can take a long time. I fed feeders, then feeders and worms, then feeders, worms and shrimp. Try what solomon(e_americanus) suggested with the dead fish on the end of an acrilic stick, if mine takes too long. u might need ur shrimp to float. originally mine had to float for him to take it. so i had to cut the shrimp and have it barely frozen. try to get them to float!! that definetly will greatly help ur chances of getting the gar to take it

Sorry if it's a bit off topic but what's YOY?
