I see this way, rescue: death is imminent. a sick fish in bad conditions and owners have no clue or not the ability to do whats necessary to bring this fish back to health. adopted: fish in good shape just needs a new home as owners no longer have or want the responsibility of taking care of it any more.

I see money behind any transaction, its a purchase to me. Fish, dog or human... it's paid for in full. It just sounds better for marketing.
In my book, a rescue is when one gives something to another party for free. The intent to give something a better home than the current situation (Paying legal fees is not a purchase but part of the process).
