Working for Petco.......

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's threads like these that make me glad i work for petsmart and not petco... wow that's insane. My question is how did your manager know you had lost them 2 sales unless he was observing your work the first couple days??

I recently put some of my goldfish on craigslist to sell. I'm terribly over stocked, getting a 125 this weekend to help. Anyway! Many people applied, but most people either didn't write back when I asked them questions about their current set-up, water change schedule, and knowledge of the nitrification cycle....OR they did write back but had 4 common goldfish, 4 fancies and a handful of bottom feeders in a 55 gallon. I told that girl that she was currently over stocked, and needed to upgrade her tank, separate the fancies from the commons, and increase her water changes (once every 3-4 weeks...and she seemed proud of that!)

Another guy seemed like the sure thing, he had a 15 gallon, he was going to put one goldifish in there alone, as a display tank at his job. No problem! When I asked about his water changes, he said every 3 weeks gravel vac w/50% water change. When I told him that wasn't enough, he said he'll add an auto-top off, and that his tank was self sufficient...in other words, he didn't know a thing about goldfish POOP and only tropicals. Needless to say, that fish is still here with me.

I only sold two goldfish, both to the same girl...who I actually already knew through my local aquarium club. Anyone here interested in some fancy goldfish?

Anyway, I guess the point I'm trying to make here is, if you only sell to people who have room/knowledge to keep these things, there would be no money to be made.

The girl who was training me was "always one aisle away",she is a lifer.

I'm wondering what town / city this PetCo is in, want to make sure I never shop there.

We have a local Pet co that keeps the tanks clean and will ask questions and try to steer people into making the correct choices, but will give in if pushed.

the pet co in leominster ma, has the best selection of saltwater/freshwater I've ever seen in one of their store, tanks are always clean, fish look healthy and they are like the enquirer about your set up to see if you are able to care for the fish you want to buy. I've also hear them refused to sell and the manager back up the salesperson.

The pet smart in the same town, over heard a older lady and her husband wanting to buy 2 common pleco, 2 oscars and a few assorted dwarf cichlids for a 30 gallon set up. Saleperson talked them into 2 bristle nosed pleco, no oscars and then sold them a couple dwarf cichlids which would have been okay had the lady not mentioned as she was leaving that her son had been there the day before and had been sold 3 pacus for the same set up.The poor sales girl looked like she was about to cry when she heard that. I did try and tell them about the pacus but Lady sweetly told me her SON knew how to keep them small and not to worry they would be fine.

Very rarely do employees at real LFS know anymore than Petco or Petsmart kids. Usually the owner knows a lot, but they are always away on business.

My experience around upstate NY.

My petsmarts pretty good about not selling fish that are not meant to be in a small tank. Just that their training gives them too much of a generalization. I got hassled for wanting corys and blue rams in the same tank. They said the ram would eventually EAT my cory when it got big, because it was a cichlid.

It's alright though, at least they're going in the right direction.

Go Brownsville Petsmart!

BAHAHAHAH. Honestly in the training they don't give ANY generalization with fish. IT literally tells you to only get fish with the same color tags in the same tank, and to use the inch per gallon rule, that's literally ALL of the fish training you receive.

EVERYTIME I go to the Petco near me there is 1 person at the register while 4-5 other employees are jerking off in some back room( I would complain to the manager but Im sure they are one of those jerking off ignoring customers). It is the worst customer service I have ever encountered. I don't expect them to be knowledgeble but is it to much to expect them to pick up a net. They should make it self service. PETCO SUCKS!
