I recently started one too.Got 2 cases of red wigglers from the bait dealer at the end of the season.I have to leave the top off the bin and keep a light over the bin or they all crawl out.Been feeding them for about 2 months now not sure if they are breeding or not,I guess I should check more carefully.

No smell at all - or my wife would've already banned it to the outdoors. They're in the basement.

My peat controls moisture very well. I do have a receptacle underneath, but nothing so far. The soil is moist but doesn't drip.

Cool that you farm worms as well. When you say "large scale" - what volume?

Sounds great My worms tend to leave the substrate when they're hungry. Make sure to provide enough food. It takes weeks for veggie scraps to decompose to a platable stage. Until then, it's not available for the worms. I kept mine "under ground" by initially feeding with dried cow manure. You will notice juveniles easily - shorter and thinner than a pin, they crawl around everywhere.

large scale means 2 8x4 pens of them.... soon to be offered to MFK... me and a friends project.. he wants the soil and i want the worms... works out perfect lol

Cool. But 8x4 means it's in the backyard, right? Which in turn means downtime during the Winter, or do you guys have access to a greenhouse? Either way, great idea, please post updates

I have had bad luck with my worm farm as far as getting baby worms.

I now just keep them in gallon jar in garage but even than can't keep them more than Nov to March as garage gets to hot .
They get fat on cereal and apple cores but never bred

In summer I put them in refrig . They are great cichlid bait maybe the best for smaller cichlids.

$2 to $3 for that many worms is great.
Its nice to have a bassement lol .
Summer or winter they hold fairly steady great worm farm temps . No basements in Florida

I was going to do red worm farm last fall but read they can draw other bugs. Any problems with that? What is the mixture % of the soil?
