Today i learned that most tanks contain small "gravel" worms that sometime free float. One tank had it bad so i cleaned the gravel, there must of been hundreds. While large quanties are a sign of poor maintence, I was told almost all aquariums have these small worms. Is this true?

I found one about a year ago. And then a few more not long after. Once I put four 3 - 4" clown loaches in (that I have since removed 3 weeks ago), the worms and small snails were gone before too long. I was told it was just too much nutrients. But I wouldn't have the experience to back it up.

I heard almost all have tanks have some type of worm, and 100% of planted tanks do. Though most worms are very small and go unnoticed.

LOOK VERLY CLOSELY AT YOUR TANK AFTER STURRING UP THE GRAVEL. Do you see little line the appear to wiggle? those are worms, I didnt notice till someone pointed it out to me

These worms are harmless. All they do is help break down wastes. And the side benefit is that fish will eat them. So it is a win-win situation. It does not mean the tank has poor maintenance either. Reason you see them in planted tanks cause there are rarely any predators to eat them. No need to lose sleep over getting rid of them.

if you have gravels then yes. if you have sand then no.

sometimes harmless sometimes harmful.

having gravel gives parasites and potential harmful worms a place to side.

most likely due to left over food that gets under the gravel uneaten then forms worms.

Im just no longer eager to stick my hand in.
