Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Will definately try the trap idea as i want this thing gone!!
Also definately not hermit against glass either, real distinct clicking noise unlike anything hitting glass.

Two more questions
1) is it normal not to be able to find it even at feeding times?? Swear i've searched high and low!
2) assuming it is approx 5cm in size, how much chance is there of it breaking 15mm glass??

Mantis Shrimp are very ilusive they have the best eyesight in the ocean and will see you before you see them most likely the trap is your best beat for time and energy. Most likely it is a small mantis so i doubt it'll break the glass the clicking sound is it probably smashing your inverts.

is the sound a click or a thud? if its a click it could possibly be a pistol shrimp. was the wrasse dead or alive? and what condition was it in ? did it look like it had been eaten? my friend has a 'spearer' mantis and has to introduce the fish properly because if she's not hungry she wont attack it and instead the fish die and pollute the water and are not eaten, if the wrasse looked like it had been beaten and not slashed it may well be a mantis but 'spearers' make a single hit so repeated clicks wouldnt be heard

When I was keeping mantis I would put a piece of frozen krill onto a wooden skewer stick from the grocery store to feed them with and they would actually swim right out like an attacking fish would and take it physically off the stick during daylight hours with the lights on. You could try this and see if you could bait it out or at least entice it into peeking out of it's hiding place. If you are looking you will see it come out eventually even if it is just to wander around. You can try traps, I've heard mixed results with these but they are about your only option when a lot of live rock is involved. When you hear this noise is it clicking or is it more of a loud snapping or cracking noise, or is it more like a pop sound? I think pistol shrimps tend to be one loud POP, but my mantis' were like a loud cracking noises when they would hit the rock and they would do like several in a row sometimes. They were loud enough to have me worried about the glass on the 7 gallon bowfront occasionally but nothing ever happened and the mantis' were like 2.5" and 3.5", housed seperately in two 7 gallon bowfronts.
