I bought a used 75gal tank with a 30gal sump ....anyways havent had a fish in it yet, have a oscar ordered coming this week in the mail...but i keep getting 0.25-0.50 ammonia readings, i keep doing 25-50% water changes, why on earth am i getting ammonia levels with no fish in the tank? theres 1 big driftwood in the tank, malaysian driftwood..i had it in my previous tanks before, i boiled it and all that...otherthan that, the sump has a new heater, thermometer, new filter pads media, new bio balls...my well water has no ammonia in it, i tested it........im really puzzled..i gotta get this cleared up before my oscar comes....

edit: also the substrate is pool filter sand, bought it brand new, and rinsed it out good..

i cleaned it good i thought but i couldnt take the sump out due to it being mounted in there, scrubbed it best i could..i bet theres some decaying matter, hopefully it'll go away eventually, ill keep doing water changes, its a very small spike

I know ammonia isn't good but oscars are pretty harty fish.

Yeah I am gonna use tetra safestart 3 days before my oscar comes, but it just scares me with small ammonia spikes before he/she is even in the tank!

Did you have all the water from the previous owner or is it new water?
