Hey everyone. Well, I went on vacation for 5 days and had my tenants downstairs feed my fish. You know how this is going to end. I came home and the water smelled really bad, 2 dead (cheap) fish and food stuck to the inlet strainers of the filter. I noticed that there was a bump on the bottom left side of one of my flowerhorns. It's on the inner bottom half and looks like a bump. I have changed 25% of water everyday since I've been back and will probably continue everyday for the next 3 days. There's already salt in the tank and the water temperature is high like usual. I haven't feed them since Wednesday and I fed them today. Just gave them a little bit of food. The other flowerhorn and fish were really hungry and the one with the bump did eat but not that much maybe because he can't close his mouth all the way. The lips aren't protruding, just the bump on the inner lip. Should I just wait it out by doing water changes or should I use something to medicate? I'm thinking of waiting for another 3 days and see what happens before I need to medicate. What should I do? Thanks, Ed.

I try not to medicate unless its a new fish and using a hospital tank and treating for parasites. In your case I would not medicate. Just continue with waterchanges.

I know a lot of people don't use large rocks for substrate because it's hard to clean underneath them but I like the look to it. I was thinking about how to use the large rocks and be able to move them easier to clean underneath so I have smaller rocks underneath the larger ones so the larger rocks can move easier to clean underneath them. I actually was watching the Discovery Channel and there was an episode of how ancient civilations moved large, heavy objects by rolling them on trees. I figured it might work and so far it has. Have had an easy time vacuum cleaning underneath the large rocks and the water has been crystal clear. Water only looks dirty because of what happened after coming back from vacation and doing the first water change.

Just curious, how do you clean the bottom with all those huge rocks?

Unattended tanks tend to promote a number of fish illnesses. dirty water, uneaten food, and bad conditions cause most diseases or allow them to take hold of your fish. Get some better pictures of his mouth, that bump is huge. I'm thinking columnaris already, but not 100%

Get this guy in a hospital and starts meds immediately. That's duck lip and if you wait for another three days, there's a good chance you won't have even have the chance to save him. Duck lip is very deadly. It's tough to cure, but is curable. Your gonna need metro 250mg tablets.

move this thread to freshwater diseases section, for the best advice.
I have seen posted before, for ducklips "lower the temp in the tank to 75F. Do a a large 50% water change and treat with Metro and Furan-2".

his lips look extended to me.

Here's some pictures I took now about 8 hours later. The bump is gone like it popped and there looks like bruising underneath the area. I hope it's not duck lip. I just fed him 2 large mealworms and he ate them.
Are these symptoms of duck lip? Should I treat this like duck lip or get some kind of medication?
