WORRIED! Sick Ray?? HELP?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry to hear that man! I feel your pain, you know i do.... but i am in the process of bouncing back... im sure you will someday too!!!

Sorry to keep everyone waiting.....Anyways the female henlei wasn't the only ray I lost....sadly I also lost my male henlei/leo. I've never lost a ray before but for me the first time are the most hurtful, mainly because both of them were black rays. On the other hand, I managed to rescue/saved my hystrix and my black arowana. Both are doing well, and are already starting to eat again. I still don't know where the ammonia came from, as I'm certain 2 AC110, 1 Emperor 400, and 2 Fluval FX5 are more than enough filtration with a 25%-30% WC a week for my bio-load. As for all my other tanks, still no traces of ammonia was found, only the 180. Other fish are doing well, with regular WC. I came to a conclusion, and will still stay in the hobby....:D Even though this is my biggest lost ever in this hobby, I will sure overcome it and not give up so easily as I always wanted to become a WI ray breeder one day...... I have other plans up my sleeves, and will keep MFK updated. Thanks everyone for helping and keeping my head up!

Sorry to hear about your loss H. But glad you didn't bail on the hobby. I do
wonder though if some type of food got pulled into a filter and fouled the water.
Just an idea.

glad your sticking with us and keeping your head up!! i agree with ss on it also what is your filter cleaning schedule like? thats alot of filters to keep clean of uneaten food. maybe you could add prefilters to your hob's that way you know nothing is really getting up there then mainly focus on your fx's.

I've changed/cleaned the all 3 HOB filters, to:

2 (1 Emperor 400, 1 AC110) into a sponge/cartridges media based filter
1 (1 AC110) into a ceramic ring media based filter

I'll clean out the FX5 in a week or two to let the 3 HOB filters settle first. Been almost a week now but just to be on the safe side.....Updates later.

I know some people dont like it, but do you use the ammonia remover in your Fluvals.. I started using it and it is doing great for me. I dont just trust it by it self, still do my water changes,etc.. but the extra added help doesnt hurt..

Similar thing happened to me due to filter failure from the AC70s (not the only filter on the tank). Impeller slowed down/stopped without me knowing. This led to the die off of the BB in the HOB area (I'm sure if if you guys have ever experienced this but BB die off leads to HUGE ammonia build up in the filters).

Anyways, I did a water change as usually and did not notice the filter problem. Plugged it back in and the impeller went full speed and dumped a crap load of ammonia into the tank. Went to the restroom for less than 5 minutes and came back to find 20 of my favorite fishes gasping and suffocating - some close to dying and some dead as they floated upside down lifeless in a cloudy tank that had the strong scent of poison...

Bummer you lost your rays.

Mite be time to look into stepping away from HOB/Canisters.

I think it's very difficult to keep bio clean in these kinds of applications. I think eventually the bacteria dies off after being overwhelmed with crud due to poor mechanical filtration caused by lack of necessary maintainance.....

Seems a lot easier to set up something that lets you easily swap out mechanical filtration. The easier it is to change the easier it is to stick to a very strict maintainance routine. If strict enough the bio should never get dirty/cruddy and everything seems to stay healthier.

There's been several instances where overwhelmed off the shelf filtration leads to problems.

Just my $.02
