just throwing this out there, but maybe it's getting ready to fade?

Exactly what I was going to say. If you notice the fish has no stress bars. If it were dark based on stress or if your gravel or background were black you would see stress bars or the fish would be losing it's pearling as well as color. Since it looks quite active and still has pearling I would say your fish is going to fade.

Thanks for the suggestion.
The thing is I don't really know what this "fading"means.
Is it a bad thing? Does it mean it is losing all it's color?

Can this happen to any breed of flowerhorn? And finally how long does it take?

He still has a darkness to him, but I have noticed this:
Every night around 10pm (when we watch tv) he lightens up, to the point where he looks normal. We go to bed, boom the next day back to dark color again.

And yes I agree it doesn't look like stress. There are no stress bars and he seems happy as larry swimming around the tank.

I have since starting this topic moved to his own tank, and changed the darkish blue background to a bright white one.

Here is a picture from last night around 10pm (when he keeps lightening up):

To bad i can't see that picture you put up.

I'm not an expert like others here, but i have a fader myself, and IMO totally not a bad thing, sometimes, if not usually, your fish becomes way more beautiful. And not so much losing color, as changing from one color to another. UHM PEELING is a good word to decribe it. Like Red Devils do, if you've had any experience with them.
eg. my FH was a typical Trimac looking color, now its an awesome Yellow blending into a deep red with a few pearls.

And it doesn't happen to all FH's, no. I'm not good with all the strains and names and things, someone else here can fill you in on that part, but definately not all flowerhorns fade.

I can't explain whats happening to your fish, but it seems like a very unique and interesting one. LOL maybe it likes watching TV. people say fish put on their best colors when they are happy and healthy right? LOL good luck

If the fish lightens up when u watch TV then I say he needs color in his tank... If he was fading he would turn black and stay black till he peeled... Try some natural gravel and a saltwater background.
