Worst line breeding ideas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've got a shortbody albino convict.. He has a big hump too. No problems swimming at all, he tries taking on my 10" oscar and he's 3" max.

Longfin anything, balloon anything, altered body shape of any type.

Really any line bred anything means that the breeder selected for something other than health/hardiness in which health/hardiness was lost. You see it in fish, dogs, anything that humans get involved with and selective breed for anything other than health and hardiness those two things, the two most important things, are lost.

Ashamed to say, the best and the worst I've seen, come out of Asia. In the recent years, other than dyed, tattooed fish, balloon anything, short body anything, there's been 'Camel back' Channa and Clarius Catfish. What's 'Camel Back'? They break the backs of young fish so they grow up swiming around in a V shape :irked:
On a personal note, I hate parrots and flowerhorn. I recently saw a short body silver aro. Not a pretty sight.

They should have just stopped at fancy goldfish and betta.

They will never stop until people stop buying them (which will never happen). I don't understand why more "serious" hobbyists don't see the problem with these kinds of fish?

Many of my fish are either wild caught or one or two generations from it (F1, F2, etc). Aside from one fussy pair I have, I have spawned ALL of the fish I own (that have been spawned in captivity before, and growouts obviously don't count yet) this year, with the objective to get high quality and healthy fish with strong genetics (no F1000000 petsmart fish for breeding) back out in to the hobby--5 species this year so far. I plan to double that number before the year is over too.

If we inbred people enough, could we get shortbodies, veilfeet or balloon bellies?

I think we as Humans don't have problems in that area with the obesity around the world...

That back breaking part is news to me... never knew they were doing that, nor have i seen fish that were shaped as a "V"

Have you got any pics of these types of "V" shaped fish, coz i'd really like to see one, seen as i live in Asia and don't think i've ever seen fish like this?

That's a rather slippery slope, unless you want to flush the vast majority of tropical fish found in this hobby. While you & I agree on many aspects of keeping & breeding fish, I don't believe that one has to keep or breed wild caught fish in order to be "serious" about this hobby. (been there, done that) It's not like yours or my fish are going to be released into the wild, so besides genetically weak and/or deformed freaks of nature, what one keeps in their own tanks, for their own pleasure, ought to be up to them, don't you think?

BTW - theoretically speaking, an F1000000 fish could be just as genetically strong, and healthy, as an F1 specimen. In animals (including fish) the filial (F) designation has nothing to do with whether the parents are "pure" or not, nor does it imply genetically superior specimens, it simply denotes the first generation that is produced in a breeding program, and is a system used to keep track of the parental generation.

F1 = first filial, which designates that a fish is one generation away from the parental generation.

F2 =second filial, which designates that a fish is two generations away from the parental generation. etc-etc

The parents can be related, unrelated, and even different species. Using the filial system as originally created by Mendel, the offspring from all of the above would be considered F1.

I agree that people should be allowed to keep whatever they want in their own aquariums, but balloon bodied just makes me sick :( even balloon mollies, which I see all the time in the lfs. I have two veil tailed bristlenose plecos, and they seem to have no issues swimming. granted, they're usually on the wall, so they don't swim much anyway.

+1 for dogs as well. my mom has a pug and she has a zillion breathing issues :(
