Worst Night In a Long Time

I don't see temp shock killing your fishes, if the difference is within 3 degrees.

How much water did you take out?

The only thing i can think of is there was something else in that tub that caused a dramatic event like the one you mentioned.

Has it been raining much in your area lately?

I know the water board in Sydney adds all sorts of additional chems to the water after a big down pour to help kill the nasties for human consumption, not the best sort of things for your fish though...

Ugh. I'm so sorry. Is there any chance you missed something simple like a pH swing? Had the pH in the tank dropped or gotten really high before you added new water? Did you remember to put dechlorinator in? Could a heater have broken and sent electricity into your tank? Could there have been a temperature fluctuation in the water while filling? Say if someone flushes a toilet or turns on a faucet in the house and the water coming out of the tub gets cold or hot? I'm just trying to pose questions to help you figure out why.

I know how awful that is. I lost around 30 fish in one night once. A breaker blew in the middle of the night for no apparent reason, and we woke up to a tank full of no O2, tons of ammonia, and a devastating number of dead catfish, plecos, loaches, etc. It was very suspect that a breaker would go when our electricity use was at its lowest. However, we had suspected we were connected to a neighbor for a long time since we had $300 a month electric bills in our one bedroom apartment, and we just had a new neighbor move in a week or two before this happened. We figure we lost about $1,000 worth of fish that night when the filters stopped. We saved some, but I was just devastated. I put so much into my fish that I get really attached. I was so upset I was beyond tears. I just sat an documented the fish that died so at least I had something left. I kept them in my freezer for months before my husband finally threw them away. :(

Again, I'm so sorry. Here at MFK you will at least find people that don't think your crazy for crying over your dead fish, and can all relate to the ups and down of this delicate hobby. I hope you find the answer to what happened so it doesn't happen to you again.
