Would a 6x2x2 180 be too much for this space?

your 55 is only 12 wide, so a 180 gonna be another 12" out. i'd do it, but my whole house would be filled with tanks if the wife would let me.

in the world of aquariums there is no such thing as too big.

because in time, even your new 180 will fill up and you will say

"damn, I wish I had more room!"

I knew as soon as I posted that that someone would say something like this :)

I didn't mean too big. What I should've said was that the space is too small!

Trust me, when we buy a place (next summer) the 180 is going to be the baby tank.

In the photos, what is the high wall switch for?
Would it be covered up with the bigger tank?
Is that a bad thing if it was?

On the left hand side you seem to have a lot of room to use.
So that side could actually use a bigger tank to fill that void where the cat house thingy is.

However on the right hand side you have the kitchen bar/counter and thats a problem as I would not want the tank's glass anywhere near it.
If you get too close to the counter it might appear aimed at the glass and cause the eye to become too interested in that close connection.

I like the way the stand in the photos goes so well with the flooring.
I think any such wood stand no matter the color would go well there too.
Im not really worried about the fireplace heat as you dont have all that much heat flowing sideways from a fireplace anyway.

I would like to see you mark out on the floor or on the wall somehow to see how the new tank might look, and see how it would fill the space before I could say for sure how I felt it looked...

that switch operates two ceiling mounted lights above the fireplace. The only time they've ever been on is today, when we were tearing the wall open to run TV cables. I don't care if that gets covered.

The room is not as empty as it looks in the 2nd picture - you can barely see in the first, but there's a leather chair there, which would create sort of an aisle to enter the living room between it and the tank. The tank would also jut out significantly past the fireplace wall piece that comes out. And yes, it'd be right up close to the counter, and close to the other wall - the space from the counter to the wall is 75.5", I think.

I wasn't thinking the counter would throw my eye so much as the fact that when I look at that wall, I don't center things based on the counter, but on the spot where the wall angles right near the cabinet. But to fit the 180 in, it'd end up 2-3" from the fireplace wall but still almost a foot from that edge on the right. And that might bug me.

The 180 has the exact same cabinet, so I know at least that'd look good. But you're right, a darker wood would look good too, as the room itself has dark cherry tables, and just above the tank is a picture frame that matches the tables.

I'm really thinking that just using the tank stand as a dresser in the bedroom might be the best option. It'd look nicer than what's in there now (but not as nice as the one I just bought that's being stored - the initial plan was to just take that and put a 72x18 footprint tank on top of that, replacing the 48x13 55g that's in there on the crappy dresser now).

Hmmph. I need a bigger house.

Hard to go against a 180g, but for the overall look of the room I would think a tank 5 foot long would look better. I think a 180g would looked crammed in that space.

There's a 150 (or at least it claims to be) on CL, 72x18 footprint. I need her to measure the height for me, but if I can negotiate with her a bit (I should be able to, I've seen it posted a few times before) that'd be more appropriate - my original plan was to get a 6 footer for the bedroom, so the monster fish still get an upgrade, but that space remains untouched. How much should I offer for a 150 w/ iron stand? She's asking 350. I don't need the stand but I'm sure she wants that gone with it.

Because ultimately, I agree, a five footer is probably all that that space can handle.

However, that's not going to stop me from moving the couch out of the bedroom, putting the new big dresser right at the foot of the bed to see how that'd look, on the off chance that it'd work having a little aisle between the dresser and a 180 :) I like having the couch there to sit on to look at the fish, but this idea could work too. (I really want this damn tank!)

For reference, the bedroom layout is pictured here- 16x12 with a couch at the foot of the bed, a 2.5 foot aisle, the cichlid tank atop that dresser, and space behind it to throw clothes on the floor at the foot of the closet without it looking messy since the dresser blocks it. It's a perfect setup, really. Except for that exposed cable, which is only temporary.

Plenty of room. Just the concern that it might look a bit amateurish to have a tank like that in there. Then again, it'd look better than that ugly ass dark pine dresser. Plus with a real stand I'd have room for an FX5 underneath it instead of the filters (in this case 2 XP3s) sitting directly behind it.

(Why yes, I am putting way too much thought into this.)

my thought is, if you're moving in a year or so, and the 180 is that good of a deal, get it! If it isnt 100% awesome looking in this house, no biggie cuz you're upgrading that too! hehe

Dave,
the couch is nice,
the bed is nice,
the dresser is nice,
and the two dogs are nice,
the clothes basket is nice, but put them all in the same room all lined up as you have and you got a lot of stuff going on there!

Im not sure what to tell you, if you are out of room you are out of room.
And it's hard for me to tell you where to put an even bigger tank because Im not sure what I would do in you place.

Everyone wants support everyone else in making the bump up to bigger and bigger tanks. (thats a given)
From the photos it clearly seems to me that you have some growing pains with getting a bigger tankand things given the space you have to place them.

I dont have very many ideas for you past what you have already listed as some ideas you have already.

Perhaps-
Dump the bed headboard and slide the tank there perhaps?
Slide the bed to a side wall more to open up more space?
Forget using the fireplace and cover the fireplace with the bigger tank?
Get a smaller bed?
Store some stuff that could open up some floor space?
