would a RBP be ok in a 30

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have 2 1.5" rbp's in a 20 right now...theyre fine. eventually they'll go into a 40 breeder n then keep stepping up until they reach max size.

red bellies can grow up to 12"plus for sure. if you don't believe me i can prove it.

To prove it I would have to see the fish tape measured with proof that it's a captive fish and was raised from a baby. And enough people with 12"+ reds to be able to say it's a regular occurance to grow them to that size in captivity from small size and that a majority of them get that size.

Which is pretty much impossible for an owner to go through that but that's what it would take for me to say ok. I'm a skeptic so it would take alot of proof to get me to think otherwise and it would reverse what I've seen and some people who have alot of experiance in piranha say/have experianced.

I still say 55g is enough for a small shoal and many people who have been keeping them for decades would agree. 75g is the minimum given by most piranha enthusiasts. No other pygo would I keep in such a small tank. But with p. natteri I haven't seen anything to suggest 12"+ is anywhere close to the norm for captive raise RBP. But it's all opinions, I'll always stand by that. Everyone has a different one and that's ok.

I would add another 1-2.. 2 rbp's will probably end up with aggression problems against each other. Add another to spread it out.

Since when did I say to "stuff" a 12"+ fish into a 30 gallon?

Did I specifically say "When your red belly reaches 12 inches (or more, since they are capable of it) into a 30 gallon tank"? Nope, didn't, don't even see where it was hinted at.

I've heard of more 10" RBPs, than twelve, and you could get away with a 10"-er in a 30 better than a 12 and up.

Then again, whomever had suggested a 55 for life, must've changed their mind, since this is a number I would personally go with, for 1 fish, for life.

If you want to go perfect for reds, the Amazon River is perfect considering that's their natural habitat.

Im not trying to offend you or anyone else, Im just stating that a large fish should not be kept in such a small tank. Telling people that they can keep a rbp in a 30g tank is almost as bad as suggesting an oscar could be kept in that tank.

You said in your previous post, "for a single rbp a 30 would be sufficient". And NO a 10" fish should NOT be kept in a 30g tank.

How do you expect a fish that can reach 12+ (I will post pics later) to grow to its full potential in a 55g which only has a width of 12"?? It just doesnt work like that, that is why a 75g tank is the minimum that you should keep a red. You could keep it in a 30g, or 55g for a little while but they grow very quickly and you would soon need to upgrade to a 75g or larger.

You give me a call when your p. natteri gets 12"+ lol Most won't get over 10".. The amount that get over 12" are very very minimal. Almost unheard of.

Honestly you could fit upto 4 in a 55g. Although 3 is a better/safer number for 55g. Sure bigger is always better but 55g is the smallest for a small p. natteri shoal. But p. natteri solo don't make good pet fish. They're very skittish when kept alone. But would I put a single RBP in a 30g and be ok with it? yeah. But opinions vary.

Same thing here, how can you expect a fish that CAN grow 12+ inches to reach its full potential in a tank with a width that is only 12"? Solo reds dont make good pets? They are skittish when kept alone? This is also not true, I and many others have kept solo reds that are MUCH more aggressive than reds in a shoal. Here I have a fish that can prove it, my red bangs the glass all day. Heres a quick vid.

http://www.opefe.com/nattereri.html<-- there you go. It says 30-35cm in length. There is also a member on P-fury who has raised his captive reds and has pics of his that are almost 13". Hes hopefully going to be emailing me those pictures later and if its OK with him Ill post them here.

Here is a friend of mine red bellies around 14" he also have more 11"12" and other large on from capivity. now these fish are in his 300gallon with proper care.

please don't tell or give advise to anyone that red bellies can grow up large in 30gallon or even 40gallon breeder. I've been keeping piranha for years for sure i know in fact what i am talking about.

i have email RB32 for more pictures from him. but this is one of the picture of his 14" and he about 4-5"thick

please don't add more...save your money and time. piranha are unpredictable. you never know what going to happen, especially young piranha are so active and aggressive.

i would keep what you have now and put them in 40gallon once they hit 4-5" move them to 75gallon or bigger. if you don't you will stunt the grown.
