Would a sump be worth it?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was thinking of running two 800gph external overflows and a pump rated at 800gph in the sump

Good idea to use 2 overflows - more overflow surface area. And don't forget to figure in head loss when you pick out your pump.

You would think that there would be a pump out there that would auto shutoff should it detect that there is no water, like a built in safety switch. You could easily position it in the sump at a level to where even if you did loose siphon, it would still pump water to that determined level and shut itself off, like a CB does to protect against overload. Maybe there is? I am new to sump game and have just been reading non stop trying to learn more. The more I read, the more I am scared to do an external overflow, and just cut my losses.

I did alot of looking at pumps when I set up my 90, and I never found one that had an auto-shutoff. There are quite a few float siwtches out there that you can add to your sump that will shut the pump off though. I was really scared when I built my first overflow. I got a trash can and set it in the bath tub with a pump and tested the bejusus out of it - good thing too. My check valve had a slow leak and it would break syphon after 4 hours with no power. After I got that fixed, I never had a problem. I really wanted to go with the Eshopps HOB overflow, but I was on a budget, so I built my own.
My only advice (for what it's worth) would be that if your are getting into seting up a sump - test it out in a bathtub or storage container first. It will not only help you work any bugs out of your set-up, but you'll really learn how the whole thing works before adding it to your tank. I think you'll realize that it's not as hard as you think.

I appreciate all of your advice and help. Im gonna keep reading and learning, hopefully someday ill get a sump together! You werent kiddin about those eshopps overflows! I wanted to do 2x 800 gph but that would be over $150 for just the overflows haha

When you do, you'll be glad you did, and you're going to ask yourself what took me so long... Shoot me a message anytime... Always happy to help out another fishnerd.

OP, you CAN drill your tank.....the label on the bottom of the tank that says "Do not Drill" is for the bottom piece of glass...because that piece is probably tempered glass....but the side and back pieces can be drilled.

I thought about this, only problem is I recently sold my 75 which would have been a good holding tank while I got the 90 drilled. I have no where to put my fish while I get it drilled, or else I would in a heartbeat. I wish I would have read about sumps before setting this one up, I was always told they were for saltwater only and never looked into them until I met a guy in the neighborhood who uses only sumps and he keeps CA/SA cichlids.
