Hello everyone,

I am fairly new to the hobby when it comes to the idea of keeping the "larger" fish, but I do know my way around with fish that top out at 8" or so. However, I am not afraid to differ to the experts when it comes to larger fish.

Recently I have been thinking about purchasing a little 2" oscar that I have fallen head over heals for at work. He is a cute little tiger oscar and has a sweet personality. The question comes down to feasibility. I am not in the habit of purchasing fish unless I can provide them with a reasonable home environment for their natural life spans.

My question is weather or not the tank I have would be suitable for him and what, if any, tankmates might work out long term.

The tank: 70 gallon tall (36 x 18 x 25)
Filtration: Large sponge filter + AC70 (Will be upgraded)
Decorations: Mostly rainbow rock to provide a cave and select live plants attached to driftwood
Water changes: 50% weekly

Advice and comments are greatly appreciated

he could live in there.....but keep up on the weekly wc, also overfilter the crap outta that tank, they are poopmachines

i wouldnt put n any live plants, ime every o ive owned destroyed any plant i put in

i would keep him solo in that tank, personally id shoot for a 90gal thats just me tho

Unfortunately a 90 gallon isn't in the cards for me right now, but if the 70 gallon is too small my back up plan was just to make it a planted tank.

Water changes aren't an issue. I do them all at the same time each week. Haven't missed one in years.

Can you think of another "pet fish" that might be better suited then an oscar?

It could survive in there

"70 gallon tall (36 x 18 x 25)" With these odd dementions I would doubt it would live a very happy life.

I've never been one to choose survival over thriving so I will give up the idea of an oscar for now then. I am sure that he will be purchased by someone with a more suitable setup.

Now I just have to consider the alternatives.

You could do it for a while, but if you're planning on housing him for life in that size tank I would probably recommend you pass on it. The 18" width is decent, but the 3 foot length doesn't give him a lot of room to swim. There are lots of other cichlids you could house in that that don't get as large and have good personalities.

Do they have short bodied oscars or are you teasing me lol?

Would the fish be good for a year in the 70 gallon? I could see upgrading it to a 90 or at least a 4 foot 75 gallon at that point. This summer just isn't the best for tank shopping with my travel schedule.

I am not teasing you, and yeah it should be fine for a year. Width is more important than gallonage, or height.

I think I love you. In a purely platonic, "you are making my fish dreams come true" way.:nilly:
I will look into these short bodied oscars and possible larger tanks to get before next summer.
