Just wondering, would it even be possible to keep a ray of any species for a while in a 5' x 18'' tank?
I'm thinking not as most motoros are sold at about 8'' diameter.
So I'm assuming it wouldnt take long at all for it to get too large?
Opinions?
Thanks..

you could get a few years out of it.... but not too long....

agreed... get some pups from someone, i think pat from amazon stingrays still has some... 150 if i remember right.. at about 4-5"

A few years with a tank width of 18''?

Thats cool, I thought it would be a couple months or so...

A guy I know who isnt too far from me is going to try and breed his motoros soon.
I might be able to buy a pup from him.

I'm not quite ready to buy, as the tank has alot of prep to go through, still needs to be buffed has it has alot of sratches (it's acrylic) then I've gotta get new filtration/heaters etc.
I'll probably have it running this summer though...

Was going to ask about Yepezi, but $500 is a bit out of the budget...

u are better off with captive bred
and yea width is fine for a lil bit but as they grow you will need a bigger one

Alright awesome.
I'll have to really think about it.
Hopefully I can get one this summer.

Are you sure about that? Last year I bought a motoro couple from a local zoo. They were born end of July beginning August. Untill now they grew to a size of 23-25cm disc size thats around 10".

Considering the tails and such 18" would be really small for these animals after a year

I've found motoro growth rates to be nowhere near consistent. I've had two pups from the same litter show vastly different growth rates. After 18 months, the female was 18" and the male was only 9", with fully developed claspers. I think 1" per month is a decent estimate of their growth rate, but exceptions do occur.

If you got a motoro pup (4" or so), you'll probably be good in that tank for about a year, give or take. I started with a couple small motoros in a 72 x 18 x 20 tank. As long as you're able to go bigger when needed, the 60 x 18 will be ok for awhile. I'd suggest getting a male, as they seem to grow slower and stay smaller than the females.
