there is a suspected and not proved link to charcol/carbon and HITH, most of this has to do with Carbon dust, and not block carbon. I personally do not and will never run carbon. prefer that space for better bio media. What will cause your Oscar to get HITH is bad water quality and high nitrates over long term. you keep your nitrates down and water quality good it will never be an issue.

I believe HITH in oscars, and many of the other S American cichlids is caused by a lack of tannin in water (and other stressful conditions like high nitrate and overcrowding). These fish come from water conditions where the tannin provides a hostile environment for pathogenic bacteria, preventing bacteria from proliferating.
By the way, the only South American cichlid you mention is the oscar, the others are Central American.
