Ok, so I decided that I want some other fish besides an oscar in the 75 gallon I'm setting up.

How do you think this would work?

1 oscar
1 fire eel
1 green Texas cichlid (Herichtys carpinte)

Thanks!

:feedback:

imo i think it would work if they are all small and put in at the same time. the oscar my however oneday see the head of the eel sticking out from his hiding place as a tasty treat and take a nip doing some damage. why not consider a bichir??? mine thrives in my oscar tank

I agree with dragonova, fire eels eat small fish but not big ones, start with a fire eel about twice as big as the others.

Get at least a 125g. Fair chance the green texas decides to give the oscar too much harassment.

it can be done. Do it. no matter what we say no body is shore what the fish gonna do untill you do it. they all difrent. Right now i got two jags a fh and a polleni in same tank with two bichirs and a comon wolf fish. only thing gets picked on is my fh. rest like each other go figure. If you check my pics in my gallery you will see my 150- check out the verity i had in there .

I would maybe just get the Texas and oscar or the oscar and a larger eel species but not all three. Thats a lot of bioload in your tank unless you plan to upgrade....or kill/eat your fish.

I Agree with you there guppy lad get a fire eel twice as big as the other fish i have a fire eel and he's about 13/14" and my arowana is only small that is the reason why i got my fire eel twice as large as my aro would proberbly wanna try and suck it up like a noodle. :)

if ya got a 4 foot long 75 gal. you should be ok. The fish i listed i got together right now are in a 75 gal also. Run ac 500 filters with dubble sponges you be alright on the bioload

But, based on 12 sq. inches of surface area per 1 inch of fish, a 75 gallon would be about 71% stocked when the fish are fully grown(results from a calculator tool for stocking densitity.)

I do realize that these are heavy bodied fish that make a lot of mess, so maybe I should use a different "rule" than the 1" per 12 sq inches.

My filtration for the tank is an XP 3 and some sort of HOB(thinking of going with an aquaclear 110, but I have 2 Penguin BIO-Wheel 200's right now, so I may just use them and save the cost of the aquaclear.)

With a large weekly water change, I think I should be OK with 3 large fish in a 75 gallon.

Of course, if it's just not feasable, then I think I will get the oscar and eel.

This tank is still in a planing stage, I'm waiting for the stand to come in, so if all goes well I'll be cycling by the end of this month.

I've never done a "big fish" tank before, so I've been researching the fish, and I get a lot of conflicting info from different sources. The eel and texas cichlid were on all the lists I've seen of fish that are compatible with oscars, and a web-site even listed a sample stocking list for a 40(!) gallon tank or bigger with an oscar and other fish of similar size. That's another reason I figured 3 large fish would be OK.

Thanks for helping me out with all my questions!
