I tried my new mag drive pump for the first time today... only to find it vibrated badly against the glass. If I were to wrap it and the plumbing in towels, would that stop the vibration? Would that be safe to do? or is there a better idea?

i have my magdrive sitting on top of one of those cut it yourself blue foam pads.
it helped quite a bit, but there will still be somewhat loud humming unfortunately depending on if your stand is open or closed door

so mag drives are supposed to be loud then? That's a shame. How loud are they supposed to be? I can hear mind anywhere in the house.its considerably louder than a power filter.

How is the pump plumbed?
If you have hard lines, PVC(etc.) directly coupled to the pump, it can add to noise.
I have always had hose between pump and intake/return lines to isolate the vibration.
Having the pump on some sponge, between pump body and glass will quiet it down allot.

i dont think magdrives are all that ineffecient.
i use the 9.5 and itll do 600gph still at 7' of head. for 93watts and the amount of power to do that i thought was pretty reasonable.
granted 5' will be max for most and thats still 750gph for a normal 950gph at 0 head

I think a huge part of the problem was the check valve. that was making most of the noise. i removed it, and it was considerably quieter but still noticeable. so my best bet is foam then? I'll remove the hard lines and use straight hose. I just gotta get that barb on there.

And for the same (relatively) 98w, you can move 3600gph. No, Mag drives are terribly inefficient. There are a TON of inefficient motors/designs out there that are constantly accepted because they are cheap. Spend a little more and you get a lot more.

Fill a zip lock bag with a bit of sand, Place it underneath and around the pump, (wherever it may touch glass)

This reduced my pump noise to almost zero (Quite One 4000) for some reason the sand worked better than foam.?
