Would this quiet down my mag drive pump?

And for the same (relatively) 98w, you can move 3600gph. No, Mag drives are terribly inefficient. There are a TON of inefficient motors/designs out there that are constantly accepted because they are cheap. Spend a little more and you get a lot more.

thats more than just a little more.
thats 2-5x as much as a magdrive. I paid 110 for my 9.5 from amazon, for the price difference i would expect the reeflo to be dead silent or i just couldnt be happy with it.

my sequence 3600, who btw makes reeflo is really quiet. i only hear the humm of the shaft rotating and i have an open stand. So im sure if you had it in a clsoed stand you would almost not hear it.

turns out, it doesn't matter how loud the return pump is. The overflow box is like a waterfall in my living room!
yeah man its the real trade off for a sump.
to quiet mine down a bit (i dont have the tube overflow box but the hard plastic flat build? if that makes any sense?) Anyway i took foam insulating board and cut it to fit the back side of my overflow box and that took about 70% or so of the noise away. Also an option is to turn down the overflow if you have a ball valve installed in the drain line to keep higher water levels in the box so less crashing.

But then you got to match the new flow to the pump:nilly: took me about a month to get mine fully perfect matched

Not laughing at you, but anyone who has gone through an overflow/sump build can sure get it.

sand huh? I'll try that but im guessing that my problem is the cheap harbor freight pump im using. lol

put up a pic of your overflow. maybe we can make some suggestions to help quiet it down.
I did so with mine and i would now say that my fx5 on my other rank is louder than the 500 gal.

i did the thing with the air tube more or less.

Well, actually first i did the air tube thing, and that left a waterfall noise. I put in bushings to raise the water level, which stopped the waterfall noise; this stopped the air hose method from working. i then filled in the other ends of the bushings with small pieces of PVC. this worked.

Now, I hear an air bubble clump in the sump every few seconds. Would drilling holes in the PVC that goes into the sump stop this noise?
