I was thinking about making my 55 a planted tank for community fish.

So I was wondering if this stocking would work:

4-5 discus
2 kribensis
some tetras
a farlowella (whiptail catfish)

The filtration would be an XP3, and I could add on a HOB filter 'for 70 gallon tanks'.

As for the plants I was thinking Amazon swords and some java fern as I am a beginner with them... (Florecent lighting).

sounds like a nice tank.. the discus get kinda big, but it takes awhile.. they should be fine for a long time though. and i've heard they are sensitive to changes in their water, so you'll need to be careful to keep their water just right.

i don't know what a farlowella is though? how big do they get as adults? lots of catfish get way too big for 55 gal tanks and they do it quickly.

Yeah, cory cats for sure. You could probably put a couple of otto cats too. I might do almost the same with my 75 when I get the bigger tank, except I'll have an uaru in there instead of the discus...so no plants.
