Would this work in a 30 gallon?

hmmmmm
if i were you i would not get any of those
i don't think you will get away with that many fish in that size of a tank to begin with.
rather than spend all that money on 5 pretty common fish, maybe get a pair of something rarer?
there are plenty of nice, smaller cichlids that can go well in that tank. a pair of A.cutteri... A. septemfasciatum... a pair of festivum maybe?
just some ideas.
but back to basics - too many fish in a tiny tank. it's not just about bioload... more importantly it's the lack of quality living space for all the residents.

Look around for anything in the archocentrus family. There are more than just cons....A. nanolutus are really nice and A. sajica, to name a few. P.M. me if you want me to give you some links to look at a bunch of different species of the archocentrus plex.....

The problem with rarer cichlids is that I'm really just relying on my LFS for my fish since I can't order fish online or drive far and I'm not sure my LFS would be able to find the certain fish if I asked them to special order.

I would love a species of archocentrus since I like the way cons look but want something a little more interesting. It's just that I might not be able to find them.

Also, don't salvini's max out at about 6", the same size as cons? People don't seem to have a problem with breeding pairs of cons in a 30g but salvini's need a 55?

they shouldnt be that hard to find. i have seen them in different stores here many times. they are somtimes called "t-bar" cichlids and arent as colorful when they are small so they are easy to over look. ask your store if they have Archocentrus Sajica, Cichlasoma Sajica, or T-bar Cichlids on their order list from their vendors and they should be able to add a few for ya.

Do what you want, who cares what these people think. You can eventually upgrade if you feel that the fish aren't fairing to well.
