Like you all know, i am hoping to build a large pond in the next yr. or 2. But i want to make it a perfect fishing pond. It will be 20 by 20 and 3ft to 6ft or deeper if i want. It will house Black crappie and lmb. The forage animals will be: Rosy red minnows, florida flag fish, Weed shiners, goldern top minnows, crawfish, snails, and leopard frogs. With Cabomas plants, lilies, anarchis, and hornwort. But what i want to know is this, will it work? Will all the rosys get eaten out, will the fish fight and will the pond be overcrowded, ect... Sorry for the lengthy ness of my post

I'm not too sure how it would turn out, mainly because I've never attempted to put together a pond, but I think the Crappie or any of the other big fish would probably eat up the rosys.

no i know that the rosies and other fish will get eaten. but, for example, the rosies get eaten out and the florida flagfish and weed shiners attack eachother, or would the crappie stunt? And could crappie eat a 7.5 inch minnow, or crawfish? Thanks for the reply

I wouldn't necessarily call it a fishing pond. 20x20 wouldn't be large enough to sustain a healthy population of fishable fish. I don't know why you would stock with rosy reds instead of regular fathead minnows. You will end up with a few large lmb and maybe a few large crappies in the end.

What you should do is talk to your DNR folks and see what you are allowed to stock and if they can give you some guidance.

So i'll change from rosys to fatheads. There will be no lmb, i though about it and just want blk crappie, w/ fatheads and alot of others. 20 by 20 is too small for black crappie? People stock 2-3ft koi in 400gal ponds? But crappie are more agressive but still?

I said it was too small if you wanted a self-sustained "fishing pond". If you just wanted to keep some alive for awhile, then it will work for a good number. But they will stunt and not grow too large if you have too many in there.

Take my previous advice and call the DNR or whatever it is in GA.

There wont be many fish at all in there. I'm plannig on buying like 10ish 4-6 inchers then if i feel theres too many i'll catch some and eat em. Plus tha raccoons and hawks will get to em too. And the fatheads will be re-stocked periodically

Hi iam from Canada sounds good on the pond. I dont know what you have there but I would throw alot of cray fish in there as this is the main crappie food here also leeches. I know they eat anything put thats the bulk of their food. Your might try some clams in your pond as they filter the water.
