Because of poor quality and heat issues in my tap water i am currently setting up a 55 gallon aquarium for the sole purpose of pre filtering, treating and heating water for water changes on my several other tanks.
My question is would it pay to set it up to where it holds a good bit of bio-media(like a wet dry that cycles through itself over and over)or would the 100 percent water change in this tank every 3 days not make it worth it because of there not being enough time for BB to grow?
 
i would think bio media would be pointless if you have nothing in there to feed it and if there was wouldnt you be changing "dirty "water and refilling with"dirty" water? if you have an established bacterial colony that is large enough to handle your current bio load adding more would not be helpful because there would not be enough food(ammonia) for it to consume. dirty= nitrates
 
An air pump & airstone is all you need for the holding tank. Just aerate the water for a few days before a WC to stabilize the pH. It will also reduce the chlorine, but not totally so keep a dechlorinator handy. What issues are you having with the tap water? All you said is its poor quality...
 
i really dont have too many problems with the water just that it is not that pretty out of the tap (a bit discollored). my main tank has been set up for 3 years and i had very few probems with water perameters but i have to deal with this disclored water, another reason for this holding tank is that where its going to be I will have easy access to a hose pipe and wont have to stretch a hose pipe across my house for heated water. I do still plan on using prime on water going in to holding tank .
 
Use the Prime after the holding tank, right before the WC. You want to keep the chlorine in the holding tank water as long as possible to keep it clean.
