I have a Rena XP2 canister filter, that has live rock, polyfill and other stuff in it as my filter for my 55g SW tank. I have a 12g bow front that is just sitting there doing nothing. My question is, I was thinking of making that 12g a fuge. How I would do it would be, let the canister suck water out of the main tank, filter it, then put the return nozzle in the 12g tank, then have a pump, pumping water back into the display tank? Would this work, or does this have disaster written all over it? Does anyone have any better idea's that may work?

I wouldn't risk it. If the return fails and your XP2 is still pumping water into the 12 gallon, you'll end up with an empty 55 gallon and a room full of water.

I'd just set-up a simple overflow system and return with the 12 gallon. That way if the return pump fails your whole tank doesn't empty.

+1 again. CPR makes a good overflow. I have issues with bubbles accumulating in the top even with a properly running pump up top...but I suck out extra air a couple times a week and havent lost siphon yet.
