Would this work?

Seeing a picture of your tank I understand what you are saying now. I think your tank might not be sump worthy. :(

I am a huge fan of sumps and they are pretty much the only filtration system I will use. I don't see an obvious way to make a sump work on your tank. Maybe put a 20 or 40 breeder behind your tank on the fkloor as a sump??? Should work... should be better than trying to use a 50g drum.

A 20g sump is really a LOT of filtration if setup well!

You also might want to go to ebay and search for trickle filter. There are some really nice over tanks trickle filter options.

Your tank looks relatively new? I am guessing because your Pothos plants are small. I am also a big fan of Pothos! They are the best way to remove nitrates from your tank.

If it was me, i would just try to construct some kind of rack that will hold the tank, tv, equipment for both of them. Something like this:

Probably cost you less than $100 to build depending on materials you use.

sump would've worked nice. since i need those filters (1 fx5, 2 aquaclear 110 and 1 sunsun hw304b) in other tanks that is why i had the idea of the barrel. there must be a way to make it work.

I am a carpenter so is fairly easy for me to build the stand you are suggesting but i like the way it looks now the only problem i am having is building a filter out of a barrel.

Huh. So are you saying you dont want to conceal the canister or other equipment?

I would also suggest an overhead sump if it didnt involve running water over top of your electronics lol.

It will work either way, you can pump water from tank to sump, as long as the sumps water level is higher than the tank, you will need it to flow back to the tank, by gravity. I have done this with pond filters (and overhead sumps), standing higher than the surface of the pond.
You could also make it work with the barrel, lower than the tank, but with this way, the pump will need to be in the sump, and water flows by gravity back to the sump.
Either way, one will need to be slightly lower than the other, to use gravity to your advantage.
I use overhead planted sumps(oxymoron (refugiums)) in window where water is pumped to the refugium, and flows back to the tank by gravity.

I usually run a line from the actual sump to the refugium, which overflows to the tank, or back to the sump (the photo above).

awesome. I'll give it a try and see what happens. I'll keep you guys posted.

Does Petco still do there $1 a gallon sale? If so you could pickup a 20g for $20 and that would make a very nice sump and look a lot nicer than a 50g barrel. Around here the plastic barrels go for at least $20, usually more (maybe you already have a barrel you were planning on using?) You could also keep an eye out on craigslist for a cheap 40g breeder if you are trying to keep costs down.

I think you are going to have issues with a sump with a water level higher than the waterline of your tank.
