I’m building a Florida tank and had been waiting to add golden topminnows until I could find a melanistic male. One finally came up for sale, so I ordered it was well as some unsexed juvies. Well they got here yesterday, very quickly and well packed I should add. Only issue is my prized melanistic male showed up missing an eye. I emailed the seller, but haven’t heard back yet. I don’t even know what I want from him. Maybe just an apology I guess. I’m thinking the fish will probably do fine. I’m bummed about it anyway though. Pictures are not great, but I think they are clear enough to show the problem

I have received fish that were in rough shape when they arrived..,torn fins mostly ceremony missing any eyeballs.I would probably be a bit upset if I were in your position.

I would be irritated too, but it really depends how it happened. If it happened in transit them I guess it’s just bad luck and the risk you take of shipping a live animal. If they knowingly sold you a one eyed fish and didn’t tell you then I think you would be justified in asking for some kind of compensation or refund.
All you can really do is wait and see what their response is.

....other than being bagged with another fish which could have injured it in total darkness I can't imagine how a fish could lose it's eye while "in transit". I can't help but suspect that whomever bagged the fish either knew of it's condition and didn't care about sending it to a paying customer or simply wasn't paying enough attention and didn't notice it.

He was bagged up all by himself. No sign of the eye in the bag, but I suppose he could have eaten it. I’ve ordered a fair amount of fish online and this is a new one for me. I’m not losing my mind over it or anything. Going to wait to hear back from the seller and keep my cool. I’m just kind of bummed out about it

I suspect that some other fish back in the holding tank ate that eye lol....or perhaps it was born that way?

Sorry about this, I sure will be disappointed . I suspect the did not lose the eye in transit. The fact the seller has not responded…says a lot.

I just received a shipment of fish from a big online retailer, 1-1.5” fry. They were all in bad shape. This was a replacement from 5 DOA 2-3” cichlids that were squeezed in 1 bag.

That’s too bad. Hope they can hold on long enough for you to bring them back up to health

I still haven’t heard back from the seller. That was the only melanistic male they had in stock according to their website, so it’s hard to imagine them not noticing if it was already like this. Unless they keep some for themselves and accidentally netted the wrong one. This guy sells on aquabid, ebay, and his own site and gets great feedback everywhere. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Curious what he will have to say about it when he gets back to me though
