I ordered a new tank (48x20x20) at the end of July this year. I asked the guy at the shop to drill 4 holes and build an overflow box in the corner for me this was no problem he has done this before. I decided to have jet black glass ordered for the overflow which was a special order.

Now there have been a series of hold ups in deliver including the tank took 2 months to get to the shop, the first lot of black glass got broken then the tank base got smashed while he was drilling (this was at the end of November). The guy didn't feel comfortable replacing the tank base so he ordered a new tank from the manufacturer. So that all sucks but I understand glass can be tricky to work with and **** happens.

The new tank arrived 17th Dec (Friday) and the guy told me he would do the work the next day. He didn't. I called Sun and he said "yeah I will get it done today or Monday". Anyway I thought I will just give him the rest of the week and pick it up Friday. Well Thursday night he calls to say the tank might not be ready on Friday but he will see. Friday he calls to say it is not ready he is sorry for the delay but he will call boxing day and drop it off at my house. Through gritted teeth I agreed. Well it is now the 28th and no call, the shop is shut so no communication can be made by me.

I am furious and want to forget about it and shop somewhere else for the tank but I have a couple of problems.
1) it is the closest LFS to me and I usually get really good service and their fish are good quality.
2) I got given a $100 voucher for the shop for Christmas so I want to spend that there.

What do I do?

Thanks

Dylan

I can't tell you what to do since I don't know your circumstances, but you asked, "Would you put up with it?"

I wouldn't. Its been 5 months and you don't have your tank yet? I would move on and get one somewhere else.

If you do get it from him, look it over really well. Test it if you can before paying for it. It sounds like the guy really don't care...and if he ever gets around to doing it, it most likely will be a crappy job.

Good luck bro!

if theres another fish store within a half hour of that one, then no don't put up with it. go spend your 100 dollar voucher, and after you get your fish/equipment/whatever tell the guy you aren't gonna wait any more through his laziness

Tell him you've been waiting since july and that's unacceptible, so he can just keep the tank because you've placed an order with another shop. When he offers you a freebie or a discount to try and persuade you, tell him you have to check if you can cancel your order from the other place, then call back and accept his offer, and just wait for your tank. It's taken too long, but it will be quicker to just wait for this guy to finish than to try to order from somewhere else.

Be sure to test the tank for leaks if you manage to get it. High chances of it leaking.

I would order a pre-drilled tank from the manufacturer. That would eliminate the chance he will ruin another one. I would use the voucher and be done with the place. It sucks that other LFS are far away, but think about it. Having that one close isn't doing you any good. That store obviously doesn't appreciate your patronage, so they don't deserve it.

Thanks for the replies. I have now had a written quote from the next closest LFS, they make their tanks in-house and I have seen there work so I am happy to use them. They are a bit more expensive (about 10%) but I can be pretty confident they will do a good job in a short time.

Armed with this info I will be going in to talk with the local guy tomorrow. I think if the tank is finished and he will offer me a substantial discount I will take it. If the tank is not done I will just spend the voucher and order the tank from the other shop.

If I get this tank I will be sure to inspect it closely and get it filled and running in my shed before it comes into the house. This guy has drilled all the tanks in the shop so I am sure he is capable but maybe he got spooked by smashing the first one. I don't know.

I think I am most annoyed because I am on a first name basis with the owner and I like the place and shop there all the time but they have really let me down on this order.

When peop0le tell you there gonna do something and don't, all bets are off. Do what you feel like doing, all cordination in this situation is over. You'd be a fool not to take control of it now.

I wouldn't even bother with the guy now.

take your business else where and you will probably get a much better tank in the end.

with all these screwups, who knows if you will get a quality product in the end. as mentioned, high chance of leakage from rushing to finish and not doing a good job with the silicone work.

be careful.
