"You are looking at Reticulated, Burmese, Anaconda and Scrub being the four most common giant snakes.

I don't see anyone keeping them on the forum."

I keep 3 out of the 4 !!!

I've been bitten by a 9ft retic - hurts like hell- lots of blood too -- but nothing too serious - anaconda bites always make me itch and sting ... fortunately my big girl is exceedingly tame - the smaller girl 7ft still likes to have a nibble every now and again.

I had a friend who was bitten by a 14ft burm - she was feeding it a rabbit and it grabbed her hand - she pulled her hand away (of course first reaction) and tore a lot of flesh, she damaged tendons too ... nasty scaring !

Now that you mention it, I do remember how the bite itched as it healed...

Their saliva has enzymes in it that more or less "lube up" the prey item to allow it to safely pass into its digestive system.

I've also noticed that bites from pythons and boas did itch somewhat as it healed. I'm guessing that those enzymes present in our system is what may cause the itching sensation...

well if the snakes got fangs, it will probably be venomous, so yeah, that could cause problems lol. Big boids... If it's a defensive strike I guess I'd be happier than a mistaken feeding response and end up with the coils aswell. I'm sure it will hurt a great deal if bitten by a big boid, but even an adult corn snake, isn't going to give you much grief, I agree with jason, it will always be a bit of a shock though especially if you hadn't read the signs beforehand... just so quick.

Well, some snakes have venom, of course. Others (commonly available) do not.

All Tarantulas have venom as well... And there are many species id rather have bite me over other species. All of them have different potency. A bite from a python is just a dry bite, which is why id rather take that ;p

One thing I've found out is that pouring warm water over the snake will make it loosen it's hold if it starts to constrict. It relaxes the muscles and will allow you to escape more easily.

As many have said before, all snakes are different. Snake bites are not too bad enless they are venomous. I will take a snake bite over a lizard or a croc. any day. I have been bitten by most any thing you can think of, even big bugs. The most painfull bite i have ever received was from a purple mouthed moray, its teeth went right through my hand and out the otherside. Although get bit by a dog once and snakes are childs play. Even a little dog can enflict some serious damage.

you sound like quite the animal charmer.

and rakie I was just differentiating between fangs and teeth.

Just to add to the thread :)

The most common quote I have seen in the snake keeping area is

"It's not if it will bite you.... It's when"

I only seen online a large snake bite.. It looked pretty rough :D

Too bad Bryan Fry is basically proving all snakes to be venomous. ;) Just not all of them are potent or have efficient delivery system. ;)

Not every snake with fangs are venomous though, there are some harmless colubrids that have evolved front fang that is used to grasp their prey and hold them.

probably venomous lol.

when you say efficient... does that mean efficient or does it mean any way to do so.

do you have any links for this, it's not the first time I've heard that name or this concept, just not read anything about it.
