Wouldn't it be cool to own a giant gourami?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd have a really long tank, maybe 2 1/2 feet wide and 14 foot long. I would have a light sand bottom and a bit of low horizontal driftwood with java fern and java moss tied to it.

With some nice round fist-size and bowling ball sized round stones. Also i would have lily pads or frog sprite or whatever it is called for shade here and there I would have a large school or three of assorted cory cats and a royal pleco. But that's it for fish, aside from the gourami.

I'd use LED lighting, the expensive kind they use for saltwater tanks hung on wire above the tank affixed to a stainless steel lighting bracket, so it would look like the tank was lit by the sun. The stand might be stainless steel as well, with a massive external sump, the ones designed for outdoor koi ponds.

And I would feed it mellon and grapes, and tell it jokes and sing it songs about birds. I'd sit watching in on a wooden stool, but one made with a comfortable leather pillow. I'd have the tank near a large window, not so that the sun shines on the tank, but near it at an angle. This window would face my backyard, where i'd have multiple bird baths, bird houses and feeders, perhaps i'd leave the windows open and bird would fly in and sit on the edge of the tank and sing, but be careful Mr. Bird! Watch out! That Gourami has a taste for singing birds! Ho!

I don't know why i shared this. But i did.

I always stop and linger at the Giant Gouramis when i'm at the zoo.

I have almost the same dream. I was able to pick up a 4" GG this past summer in a barter (its about 7" now). I really wanted a RTGG but I got him(?) for almost nothing, so I couldn't turn it down. Dubbed it "Snowflake" and he's quite the personality. He soon after became the dominant fish in his 75 which he shares with an 8" severum, 5" rotkeil, and 5" tapajo, but not a bully. Hopefully, in the future, he can become a community member with my CA.....time will tell

Tell me, do they not get to almost 24 inches, or somewhere about there?

......and just nearly as tall from what read.

What a fantastic animal. I am always so impressed when i am at the zoo and I see one.

I have always had a thing for large fish like them, pacu as well, any fish that i could possibly feed walnuts and fruit to, and the odd bird if it got to close. I'd feel bad for the bird though.

I remember as a kid my grandpa had a concrete pond right out side our back door, it's huge and he keep telling me that fish is older than you kiddo! and I just jaw dropped and replied "WoW" I would guess that fish around 60 cm (the pond size is 6x2 meter and 1 meter deep.

Been there, done that X 4. Nice fish. I just wish they didn't lose their 'dolphin smile' once they passed the juvie stage.

Interesting. How do you mean. The lip swells correct?

Interesting x2 - what made you move on to other animals?

I've always been one to look for an animal that i can keep long term.

A GG's mouth is shaped like a porpoise's snout when they're in the juvie stage and becomes a bulbous lump as they reach adulthood.

I did keep them long-term. The longest being 12 years. Keep in mind I've been in this hobby for 51 years.
