looks captive bred. the tail is awful long for a wild caught. I would be sure that your tank is clean. when in doubt do a water change, cant go wrong with that. i would remove anything that could be stressing it out, including tank mates or decorations. I would get some black worms, or chop up earthworms real small. I would turn he lights off so he will feel more comfortable. Dont forget, anytime when you ssupect something isnt right, start off with waterchanges!
Yes I'm doing waterchanges. How much in one day and how much at the same time?

i would have changed to sand if i were you, the rays love to hide away.
I've actually heard that the ray really doesnt care about the sand. I was about to change it when I got my first ray but never did since I heard it was harder to keep clean and that the ray didnt care anyway.

Well, guess I shouldnt change it now anyway, that will probably only make the ray more stressed?

I would change 25% daily until the ray is back to health, cant hurt.

I agree, the substrate is not ideal. But i would not change it out now. It is not like they may run across this type of substrate in the wild. I dont think the gravel is the prob.

The rocks in the tank you are using for sustrate might not be good either. Rocks are hard on a rays disk. Sand or bare bottom is better and helps keep the tank cleaner also. If he is trying to hide under the rocks, he might be getting wounds on him from that as well.
Can I just remove the rocks from half the tank as a temporary solution? Will the ray be smart and only keep on that half?

The main issue would be stressing the ray with all the work in the tank. I would leave the gravel. I would also remove all the tank mates. Get a good test kit ASAP you may also have some water chemistry issues to resolve which are most likely unrelated to the marks on him

When i mentioned the substrate it was not becouse of the problem, it was just an future idea as i see my rays love to hide in the sand.. when i get new rays i always take out the feeding oponents, i dont take the chance.. When you feed with worms all of the fish get crazy, they love it, and that means it wont get to the ray..I hope this works out!

Well you can try that, but I wouldnt do it rt now. Problem rt now is if you try to remove the rock, and add sand, you will cause problems with the bio of the water. I agree with tor_erik70, that I would wait before changing out to sand...
Reason I asked if you saw any of the tank mates messing with the ray is I think that is the cause. And with the rock as substrait, the ray doesnt have a place to hide...
Try taking out the tank mates for awhile. or put a seperator in the tank and seperate the ray from all the other tankmates for awhile and see if the ray starts to heal. Just make sure you give the ray alot of room to move around. Maybe divide the tank in half.. tankmates on one side, ray on the other...

That's a pretty good idea actually. I have no spare tank to put the mates in but dividing the tank would solve that problem for now.
I wonder what I could use as a seperator...

see if you can find egg creat.. Hardware stores carry it.
get a piece big enough to fit in the tank. Its easy to cut and shape to how you want it. use suction cups on each side, will take about 8 suction cups.. 4 on each side to hold it up.. or use substrate to hold the bottom of it in place and suction cups to hold into place on the top...

here is what Im talking about when I say egg creat... I use it for dividors and use it on some of my tanks as tops...
this allows water to still flow thru but be strong enough that rays or tankmates wont get thru it...
