Both of my eels were new so neither had been eating regardless. I'm hoping the one I still have will start to eat soon or else I'll end up losing him as well.
Get live blackworms if at all possible for him and he will start eating for you, or try frozen mysis shrimp. frozen krill sometimes works as well finely shredded.. but I have never seen a spiney refuse live blackworms.
Are live blackworms sold at most LFSs? I've never seen them. I bought some frozen bloodworms but neither seems interested. THe BGK, however, has no issues eating anything I put in there! wish the eels would follow his example.
No problem! And that is interesting that he won't eat blood worms. My tire track will eat nothing but blood worm. And he goes nuts over them! That's the only time I ever get a good look at him.
Not sure in canada where you can get them.. but all the private shops around me carry them ( our petco and petsmart do not). I'm sure you can get them but they aren't something thast usually "advertised" ask next time your at your lfs ( try a fish only shop if you can). Bloodworms are not a good diet in and of themselves. they are alot of water and have abit of protein and nothing for fatty acids ect.. like eating frenchfries. short term they work well but if they refuse even that try live foods. You can also try small ghost shrimp or cherry shrimp. scuds... most any live invertibrate food thats aquatic will work.. even baby guppies i've used to get some finicky ones eating. I hate to say it but if you don't find something they will eat and just wait for them to start eatng chances are they will starve to death. the starvation method used for other fish often do not work with these guys. Ive also shaved nightcrawlers to be small enough for smaller eels to eat... but its an unholy mess. But it did work.
You SHAVED them? God I can't even imagine how that works, hahah, but it does sound pretty messy. I'll be going back to my LFS some time this week to get a new eel and maybe some tetras to add some color and movement to the tank, I'll ask if they have any live shrimps or worms I can possibly use for these guys. Thanks for the advice
