No.

The fish is displaying typical territorial behavior. It has claimed the tank for its own and will not tolerate any additional inhabitants. Hungry knifes don't attack tankmates for hunger purposes if they are too big to be eaten--at least, I've never encountered it.
x2

there is no way a syno is getting eaten by a fish that swallows meals whole...lol. they will both die before that happends

The Syn is probably small enough to fit into the CK's mouth (at least in its mind). He'll probably eat it. Mine's eaten big gourami's and angelfish, but you'll know for sure if he's turning around in circles to try to lull it into a sense of security- this is a hunting behaviour. If he's just biting at its face or something, then it's an agression issue, but i've never seen a ck bother anything like a syn territorial-wise.

I'm going to have to disagree, lol. An aggressive fish can bite anywhere on a fish. Fins, side, etc. Doesn't have to be just the face.
Any larger fish that pose a threat added to an already established territory will be chased, and harassed until, most likely, death. Now, I'm not saying that the Syno is aggressive, just big enough that the CK sees it as a threat, and doesn't want any competition to deal with.

Hi all.
I'd follow teh advice on here in that I'd take out all the decor & rearrange, if that doesnt work take out the syno pronto.
It could be that your knife either views it as food, a rival for territory or possibly even another Knife (Spots)

I watched my 12" CK chase my 8" Pim Ornatus - didn't think much off it as it was only brief & not a constant harrasing.......2 days later walked into the fish house to view HALF A Pim Ornatus sitting on the bottom & a Fat CK !!! :(
Still upset by that lose.
Lesson learned.

for info...the syno is about 6" and the CK is 12-13". But now they get along fine. Thanks all for calming me down.

what im saying is that sure the clown can kill the cat...but if it tries to swallow it whole...they will both die. the syno's fins will lock and jam up the knifes throat/insides. i have seen it on a lesser scale with a baby channel and an adult oscar at petland. i was actually able to rip the dead cat out...but it had been in its mouth for two days. it was no easy task. the oscar was sulking at the bottom too. they told me it will digest the cat, but i knew better. at least i saved the oscar.

but anyways...it took forever to get the dead cat out b/c of the fins...its not like you just simply pull it out...or you'll mess up the fish that ate it.,

we have a 17 or so inch ck and he is fine with a 6 inch coalt we have in with him. May want to try a larger tank for your fish or try feeding the ck some chunks of beef heart to fill him up. our ck seems to dump to catch a cold he takes fore ever to find his food and eat it. There have been alot of good ideas put out here you could also try taking out the ck rearanging the tank and then putting him back in good luck.
