Fleshy you suggested

"For a shark that swims constantly at about 5' long, I would probably want at least a 20' pool, no less than 4' deep."

then you state, " Im not saying that I will set that as a standard for myself keeping sharks."

Do you have any idea what your even talking about? You started a completely pointless discussion. You could have just asked what size tank do you think a blacktip needs.

What this is saying is: "I value what you have to say as a human being. Whether or not I am going to accept it as true, or as the advice I should/would follow is up to me."

You are questioning me, like I was/am questioning krj.

Well - I can tell you from the research I've done authors like Scott Michael (Aquarium Sharks & Rays) and Jeffery Anderson seem to be way too small in their minimum tanks size recommendations.

Even most public aquariums can't fully replica an ocean habitat or amount of space sharks have in the wild. And no public aquarium replicas the entire natural range for a single specimen for most shark species.

+1 to the second part of your comment. Unfortunately there are very few (none) fish that anyone can fully replicate the environment of.

That being said, I just think that there is a lot of over, and under shooting of shark tank size. If I am keeping a shark in the slightly smaller dimensions that I guessed, and that shark is doing well, and seems to not be restless etc...I think that would work.

I just wanted to have an in depth discussion on what all goes into these recommendations.

And another farewell to the canuck. For those unaware, he's a teenager with parents with deep pockets and a rotating lineup animals too large to be in his tank. Pretty foul attitude too, if you couldn't tell. People like him keep me away from these boards most of the time.

Then - why not start another thread on that topic?

That way - you can open the subject to all members of the board and get their input without taking over another thread.

Sorry, I apologize. Im not building a large shark display any time soon, so I just figured as long as it was on topic for the moment I would like to hear the reasoning behind your recommendations.

I wasnt saying anything, but I surmised as much.

That's one of the main reasons I suggest you start another thread on that topic. So you can not only get my view point on the subject - but also the viewpoints of other members like Zoodiver, whom deals with sharks in captivity on a regular basis.

Fleshy, why apologize? You didn't take over this thread. KRJ did. As far as I can see the OP started this off as a video of a cool looking shark tank. Nothing more nothing less. KRJ was the one that brought up tank size(as he always does) and got everyone started. And personally fleshy, I am glad you asked krj about his sources and background on these tank sizes. I really have to say guys that I am so sick of reading on here about all these tanks that are too small would really like to see a constructive talk on how to really come up the the right tank size's.
Here are some things to think about to really figure out tank size

swim glide hypothesis
the tank shape (and this does relate to tank size)
oxygen demand of the species
vision of the shark. ( tank color my play a roll here)
temperament of the species. (is the shark flighty or confident)

So Fleshy, I say lets do what krj said and start a new thread on this and lets really go in depth on these different species. And maybe if we can come up with some good real life stuff Matt can put it up as a sticky.

Oh and the info that is stated by posters should be cited as to where it came from.

Then I apology for taking over this thread.

I will say that all of these may come into play in figuring the tank size- depending on the species your talking about.

Hello fellow shark enthusiasts, those tanks belong to me. thanks for the positive comments, yes the reef sharks will out grow the tank plan b is i have a 25000-30000 litre swimming pool which is currently being changed to a enclosed shark pool. This size pool should allow the sharks to live a relatively comfortable life. Scott.
