so i woke up this morning at about 6:00 AM...went in the bathroom...turned on the shower...then realized something wasnt right!? my Bengal cat that normally comes running to greet me as soon as he hears the bedroom door open and doesnt let me out of his sight until i leave for work didnt come running this morning. so i turned the shower off turned around to go look for him and guess what i saw??? i see his butt sticking out from around the corner wiggling like he is playing w/ something. not thinking too much about it i start walking over to him just as he draggs one of my florida/spotted gar across the floor (by the snout) in front of me. he then looks at me as to say...look what i found dad!

needless to say i carefully picked the badly injured, sticky, carpet lint covered gar up gave it a quick inspection to check for any major cuts or eye injuries...noticed there werent any then gently lowered it back into the water. after holding the fish just at the surface of the water for about 30 sec. it gave a small thrust and sank to the bottom where it laid (in the upright postion) for about a half hour. i added salt and a half dose of melafix to try and keep any fungus or infections from occuring then finished my shower. as i was leaving for work he was amazingly enough swimming around and seemingly doing ok (just breathing a bit heavy). it turns out it was my fault though...after a water change late last night i went to bed w/ out covering the tank back up (accidentally) and i think the fish jumped out. i dont think the cat pulled him out. anyway...i feel about 90% confident that the fish will be ok, but only time will tell.

feel free to leave any comments...sorry for the lengthy story.

Cats can be a problem. I have 5 of them at the moment and one of them is pregnant. So I am expecting more. I also have an African Grey Parrot, a black Pug, 2 dwarf hamsters and then fish of course. I am the proud owner of a freakin zoo. Anyway, I also didn't have a cover on my new tank for a while (coz my ex decided that OUR old tank was now HIS when we broke up):swear:. I had to get a tank quickly as they were my fish and I would not give them to the jackass. My cats never tried anything with my fish, they won't stick their paws in the water. So your fish must have jumped out. Don't blame the cat. He probably thought you bought him a nice toy with batteries included. I'm glad your the little guy is okay, and I hope he'll stay that way. :)

Hopefully it works out for ya. Good luck.

Nice pics. You are good with a camera. I can't take photos of my fish to save my life. They are too damn fast. Plus, using a samsung D900i phone to take the pics ain't that hot either. It's a nice phone, but DAMN it's not great a taking photos when stuff is moving. ;) Anyone have tips for taking photos with a camera phone, coz I'm too broke to buy a decent camera. Or should I just take like a hundred shots and pray for a good one? :nilly:

lol! we have a zoo too. we have 2 sulcata tortoises, 1 redfoot tortoise, about a dozen hermit crabs, 7 fishtanks w/ god only knows how many fish, and of course our cat. i wouldn't be too suprised if he caught the fish because he doesn't mind water to say the least, but the fish would have been much more badly damaged if he caught had it. so the cat is off the hook and i'm not one for shifting the blame. i played the role of the irresponsible fish keeper this time.

Well at least you caught it in time for the fish to not become Meow mix...

You would be surprised at the incredible resilience of these fish, so I'm sure it will be pretty much back to normal in a week. Good lesson when it comes to gar though....Always keep the top on the tank....

VERY GOOD LESSON. i'm very thankful it wasn't my trop though :nilly:

the florida that i found on the floor this morning is the smallest gar in the tank, but is a fighter. this fish has a desire to thrive! i feel pretty confident that it will be ok as long as any infection or fungus can be avoided. as i've stated above i have already taken measures to avoid this and i always keep my water parameters in check. the g/f is supposed to be keeping me updated as she is in and out of the house between classes today.

UPDATE for ya....he seems to still be breathing heavily, but he is sitting upright on the bottom of the tank. I get to class this morning, pull out my notebook, and imediately smell fish...He must have at some point flopped over the notebook! He's a fighter...seems like he will make it.

Hopefully he will be ok! Sorry to hear about this Jordan...

I have done water changes and forgot to close the lid before to happens to everybody!

My 13" Florida gar jumed out and landed on a tile floor and flopped around for just a min. when i was right there thankfully and he was just fine. GL
