glad the fish is ok jordan, definitely a close call...and definitely a good demo of how tough these fishes are. i have had my share of gars jump out for various reasons. if you have not done so already, i would tape down (along the corners) of the glass tops on your tank. this works well to keep cats (and other terrestrial creatures) out, and fishes (a big gar can eventually become strong enough to push open a typical glass top) inside.

another thing regarding the recovering gar; bump up your water changes for a week or so to stave off infection, but don't use melafix as it seems to create issues with oxygenation at the surface and water column in general. you may also want to put in a bubbler just to increase water movement (and therefore oxygenation) if the gar is still sticking to the bottom for the most part. good luck, and keep us posted!--

thanks for the advice. my water changes are always very frequent anyway and as for the melafix, there was only a half dose used. i mainly use salt only to treat fish. other than being beat up a bit he is acting normal again.

sounds good with the bubbler kara, nice job.

as for causing a jump, anything can cause it really...even basic interactions between the tankmates. my big tank with the big gars have random occurrences like this all the time...one gar may spook another, or they just happen to do a particularly acrobatic breach...either way, gars, like many other fishes are big jumpers!--

the bubbler is something that we always have running. we just figure it can hurt anything.

our gar splash around alot, but never actually jump. this was a new occurance. i'm sure it was just caused by random activity as youve stated. i'm just glad i was able to get to him in time.

Wow, just saw this....I'm glad to hear that he's getting better for you guys though, and I hope his improvements keep on!!

I think maybe Bailey may have been "tattling" on the gar.....or, like most cats do, giving you a token on his esteem!! >.<

As I said though, I hope he keeps getting better for you guys....knowing you and Kara, he'll be right as rain in no time flat!!

thanks becka! the gar seems to be doing great and acting/feeding normal. i think it is safe to say this was nothing more than a very close call! :WHOA:

Hey glad to hear your Florida is ok. It's amazing how tough they are and how quickly they can recover. Anyways, good job sensing something was wrong that morning.

Thankfully he made it through for you guys!! ^^ Good thing Bailey deemed it important enough to inform you!! He deserves a treat!! lol
