Consider the fact that adult large mouth and small mouth bass are two of our most aggressive predatory native fish. Juvenile gars do not stand a chance against them. Now consider an adult gar and juvenile bass. The speed of the bass and the rounder body size means that even an adult gar will likely have trouble catching and fitting a bass down its gape.
Realistically I feel that the baby gar are less safe than baby bass... oh well.
