madagascar cichlids looks so cool, and they are getting harder and harder to get... only tilapias and paratilapias and jewels... forget these... get the cool ones.. etroplus and paretroplus and stuff ;)

I just bought a small lone male ( i think) sort of an impulse buy and placed him in my 100 gallon with Severums. He seems like he might end up being too aggressive for this mix. Does anyone have any experience with this fish in a community setting?

I find them to be aggressive with each other, but seem to ignore other fish. That being said, cichlids seem to not like other cichlids of the same shape and color, because that suggests a competitor. Although sevs are not the exact same color, the shape may be enough to trigger an aggressive response. I have kept menerambo with Geophagus, Stompatepia, Parachromis and Paratilapia with no problems. I might be worried trying to keep them with Vieja or Paratheraps.

Thanks Duane. I sort of thought it might be a bit too aggressive for my severums but he's doing ok in the tank right now and he is way smaller so maybe that will help. I just had to pick it up. I never see this fish in any pet stores. I'll probably hold on to him as long as I can and give him a tank with some other Madagascar fish down the road but i won't give him up thats for sure lol. I can actually get a colony right now but i just don't have a tank to devote to this fish at the moment.

Funny, I had a colony of 6 that grew up together, and lived in harmony for about 3 years. Pairs would form, and lay eggs but they were always eaten, yet no problem as a group. Then I tried to separate the latest breeding pair, thinking that if they had less group activity the eggs may be taken care of. Once the pair was left alone in a 150 gal tank, all hell broke loose in the group, and with the pair. None, including the (former) pair were able to be put together in the same tank again without deadly aggression, although I tried many times over a year or longer.

So starting them at a young age and leaving them alone is probably a good idea. I guess the longer I keep this lone male by himself the harder if would be in introduce him to a group. Honestly he's really small at around 2 inches if that. maybe an inch and 3/4. I do have time to figure it out hopefully.

I think you'll have good luck if you find some more soon, 2" is still a juvie, I might get worried at 4" or 5". That was the size mine first started to spawn.
