wow the snails!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have hundreds of them in all my sumps. They came from live plants I bought at petsmart and they've multiplied for a long time. They are terrible and I want them gone but I don't know how to get rid of them. They range in size from the size of a ball from a ball-point pen, to about the size of a small bee-bee. They eat all my good bacteria and my nitrites have been insanely high because of it. IT recently killed my jurupari, clown knife, and two dragon gobies... Sad day...
If anyone can ID these devils and tell me how to rid my tanks of them, I'd love to hear any advice you have to give

I have them in my wet-dry as well. I'm constantly manually removing them. I'm afraid that the only way to get rid of them completely would be to break down the filter. I'd probably lose all of my BB if I did that knowing my luck so as of now I'm just living with them. There aren't any in the main tank as I have 13 large Clon Loaches.

I do believe there are chemicals tht u can get tht will kill you snails, but also i think it will harm other crustaceans

Hello; In addition to possible harm to other tank occupants there have been reportes in posts about the big die off of the snails leading to tank spoilage when the dead snails rot.

Snails are all good, I have had a population explosion since i have been feeding the tank more (got a few slow eaters so i like to make sure there plenty of food for them!) they do a great job of clearing the leftovers also my cuckoo catfish and ropefish love to munch on snails! Id say, came in on a plant and the recent population boom would be from left over food. Their population seems to be related to food, feed more = more snails, feed less = less snails, simple as that really!

Only issue with snails are all the fricken babies that stick to the glass dont look too great!

Oh yeah, chemicals = bad idea as you have already noted. Manual removal is tho only way to be honest but if you have a tank as overgrown and jungled up as mine thats just never gonna happen. Having kept cherry shrimp before I find that snails are just the same, they perform exactly the same "tank duties" just dont look soo good!

OOOOOh just thought, Assassin snails will sort you out! excellent snail killers! They will never remove all your snails but they will certainly keep em under control! Seen some that are expensive but my local has them 10 for £10, Bargain!

Cant remember what tank size you said you have but clown loaches need to be in groups and really do need massive tanks 100gal+. another option is puffers they love thier snails but they are not community fish.

Id get as many assasin snails as you can afford and maybe feed the tank a little less. They will still be there but 100000's of snails can be reduced to a handful of snails!

Hope ive got me facts right here haha!

edit: Ah its a 120g, clown loaches might not be out of the question after all!
