When I catch fish in cold water for a tank, I let them sit in a bucket in the cold water with an aerator overnight, and when the temp reaches room temp, then I drip them. About 50% make it through the process.

I've acclimated plenty of fish in the winter and if I killed half I'd quit. If you do it slowly, with plenty of water changes (at the same temp with declor and salt), you shouldn't have a single fish die.
Don't you feel bad for unnecessarily killing fish?
